Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has recently attracted much attention, especially among urologists, because it appears to be a selective form of cancer treatment which causes minimal damage to normal surrounding tissues. In this study we made use of a new class of photosensitizers for the laser-induced fluorescence diagnosis (LIFD) and photodynamic therapy of human renal cell carcinoma xenotransplanted into nude mice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the recently developed photosensitizing drug THOPP-MPEG for its efficacy as photosensitizer for LIFD and PDT of renal cell carcinoma.

Radiopreventive and radiotherapeutic efficacy of nuclyderm-gel was studied on tails of mice exposed to fractionated gamma-radiation of 90 Gy (15 + 30 + 45 Gy) and 75 Gy (45 + 30 Gy). Daily seven-day treatment with nuclyderm-gel prior to irradiation with increasing doses (15 + 30 + 45 Gy) and the subsequent continuous therapy were shown to delay and reduce skin reactions. Nuclyderm-gel was particularly effective when used therapeutically.

Using morhometric autoradiographic and cytophotometric methods, the author examined the changes in the size of the nucleus, and of the cell as well as of the ratio: surface of the nucleus (surface of the cytoplasma in sarcoma-37 ascitic variant in accordance with their position in the generative cycle. The cells with small sizes of the nucleus 30 microns 2 were not labelled with 3H-thymidine and were found mainly in Gi-phase of the cycle. The labelled cells with nuclear sizes of 40-60 microns 2 were at the S-phase of the cycle.
