Mitochondrial acylcarnitine synthesis is an obligatory step in the transport of cytosolic long-chain FA into the mitochondria. It is an important control point in the partitioning of cytosolic fatty acids to synthetic pathways or to mitochondrial beta-oxidation. Mitochondrial carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT I; EC 2.

The fluctuations of lipids and fatty acids were closely related to sexual development and gonads represented the principal site of lipid storage in the colony. Between April and May, fatty acids and lipids greatly accumulated just prior to spawning.

Animals were assigned to three diet groups (n = 10), and fed nonpurified diet, supplemented with 10% hydrogenated coconut oil and 0.05% cholesterol for 6 wk.

DHA taken up by the perfused eyes was partitioned into glycerolipids, beta-oxidation, and the intracellular nonesterified fatty acid pool. In newborn eyes, DHA was incorporated into structural lipids to a greater extent than in adult eyes.
