High-frequency jet-ventilation (HFJV) was applied to 30 patients undergoing vertical partial surgery of the larynx for carcinoma of the vocal cords. This technique gave good surgical conditions as it interfered little with the air-ducts. It was carried out with a catheter of only 3 mm external diameter; control of ventilation during surgery was adequate, the average PaO2 being 27.

Carotid endarterectomy with clamping is performed in 50 patients. Internal carotid artery stump pressure is measured in all cases after clamping at the beginning of the operation. In 35 patients, an increase of systolic pressure is observed which allows a stump pressure more than 70 mmHg in 29 patients.

The authors have developed a new method for the estimation of peroperative blood loss by measurement of the haematocrit of a fluid obtained by diluting the blood from swabs in a known volume of isotonic saline solution. This value, referred to a monogram, may be used to assess the volume of blood impregnating the compresses, in relation to the pre-operative or present haematocrit of the patient, by direct reading. The precision of the method is discussed.
