Article Synopsis
  • The Semmelweis Study in Hungary aims to address the public health challenges of unhealthy aging in the EU by examining the factors that contribute to age-related diseases, particularly vascular cognitive impairment (VCI).
  • The pilot study involved 49 participants aged 23 to 87, assessing cognitive performance and vascular health through various advanced imaging techniques and tests.
  • The analysis showed a correlation between vascular health indices, age, and cognitive performance, suggesting that a better understanding of this relationship could lead to new insights on healthy aging.

The observation of the gate-controlled supercurrent (GCS) effect in superconducting nanostructures increased the hopes for realizing a superconducting equivalent of semiconductor field-effect transistors. However, recent works attribute this effect to various leakage-based scenarios, giving rise to a debate on its origin. A proper understanding of the microscopic process underlying the GCS effect and the relevant time scales would be beneficial to evaluate the possible applications.

Twin-screw wet granulation (TWSG) is a promising continuous alternative of pharmaceutical wet granulation. One of its benefits is that the components dissolved in the granulation liquid are distributed homogeneously in the granules. This provides an elegant way to manufacture products with ultralow drug doses.

Article Synopsis
  • The aging population in Europe is increasingly burdened by dementia, particularly vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID), which is linked to atrial fibrillation (AF), a common heart condition that can be prevented.
  • AF is known to raise the risk of VCID through various mechanisms, and its prevalence notably increases with age, particularly impacting those over 80, leading to cognitive impairments and brain changes.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has hindered the diagnosis and management of AF, resulting in missed opportunities for early detection and treatment, thereby necessitating awareness campaigns and effective strategies for prevention and care.

Introduction: The prevalence of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is continuously rising and predominantly affects older women often hypertensive and/or obese or diabetic. Indeed, there is evidence on sex differences in the development of HF. Hence, we studied cardiovascular performance dependent on sex and age as well as pathomechanisms on a cellular and molecular level.
