1000 profiles chosen randomly from an in-house database of 6000 profiles were searched against the database for matches with at least one shared allele per locus. The database contains profiles that have been analyzed with Identifiler Plus (15 markers) for biological relationship and DNA identification purposes and both true and false matches are expected to be obtained. 100 pairs of at least one true paternity match and one false match were selected and were initially supplemented with 5 additional STRs representing the new Core CODIS set.

Epidermal wound repair is a complex process involving the fine orchestrated regulation of crucial cell functions, such as proliferation, adhesion and migration. Using an in vitro model that recapitulates central aspects of epidermal wound healing, we demonstrate that the transcription factor HIF1 is strongly stimulated in keratinocyte cultures submitted to mechanical injury. Signals generated by scratch wounding stabilise the HIF1alpha protein, which requires activation of the PI3K pathway independently of oxygen availability.

P27kip is a key inhibitory protein of the cell-cycle progression, which is rapidly downregulated in early G1 phase by a post-translational mechanism involving the proteosomal degradation. In this study, using a wounding model that induces cell-cycle entry of human dermal fibroblasts, we demonstrate that p27mRNA is downregulated when cells progress into the G1 phase, and then it returns to its basal level when cells approach the S phase. By using a quantitative polymerase chain reaction screening we identified inhibitors of differentiation (Id3), a bHLH transcriptional repressor, as a candidate mediator accounting for p27 mRNA decrease.

Covering denuded dermal surfaces after injury requires migration, proliferation, and differentiation of skin keratinocytes. To clarify the major traits controlling these intermingled biological events, we surveyed the genomic modifications occurring during the course of a scratch wound closure of cultured human keratinocytes. Using a DNA microarray approach, we report the identification of 161 new markers of epidermal repair.
