Background: The utilization of short-term daily hemodialysis has increased over the last few years, but little is known on its effects on the control of serum phosphate and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) levels.

Methods: We therefore performed a cross-sectional study to compare FGF23 levels as well as other biochemical variables between 24 patients undergoing short daily hemodialysis using the NxStage System® and 54 patients treated with conventional in-center hemodialysis. FGF23 levels were measured using the second-generation Immutopics® C-terminal assay.

An increase in cell size and protein content is characteristic of cells undergoing hypertrophy and of replicating cells prior to DNA synthesis. A case of Ludwig's angina is reported in a 60-year-old woman who was discovered to have squamous-cell carcinoma of the tongue and floor of the mouth during intubation for airway management. This report emphasizes the need to consider infection of oral malignancies of the tongue and floor of the mouth in the etiology of Ludwig's angina when an odontogenous origin cannot be demonstrated. It also illustrates the value of bronchoscopy-directed nasotracheal intubation for diagnosis and airway management in such cases.
