Desmopressin after cardiac surgery in bleeding patients. A multicenter randomized trial.

Background: Previous studies showed that desmopressin decreases post-operative blood loss in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. These studies were small and never studied the effect of desmopressin in patients with active bleeding. Objective of the study was to determine whether desmopressin reduces red blood cells transfusion requirements in patients with active bleeding after cardiac surgery who had been pre-treated with tranexamic acid.

Epidemiology of animal bites and other potential rabies exposures and anti-rabies vaccine utilization in a rural area in Southern Ethiopia.

The presented report describes the epidemiology of potential rabies exposures and examines the utilization of anti-rabies vaccine in a rural area of Ethiopia during a period of 43 months. A total of 683 persons (51.1% females, 73% children) with animal- related bites were included in the retrospective, registry-based study.

Cellular and molecular responses of human skeletal muscle exposed to hypoxic environment.

The effects of a hypobaric, hypoxic environment and exercise performed under extreme conditions, such as at high altitudes, are intriguing physiological aspects that need to be investigated directly on human climbers. Their skeletal muscle is one of the main tissues that can suffer from hypoxia and physical challenges, which will both define the muscle adaptation and the molecular signature of regenerative capacity. We investigated the muscle regenerative capacity characterizing satellite cells.

Transcriptional profile of GTP-mediated differentiation of C2C12 skeletal muscle cells.

Several purine receptors have been localised on skeletal muscle membranes. Previous data support the hypothesis that extracellular guanosine 5'-triphosphate (GTP) is an important regulatory factor in the development and function of muscle tissue. We have previously described specific extracellular binding sites for GTP on the plasma membrane of mouse skeletal muscle (C2C12) cells.
