The Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) as the only lipid-associated envelope protein of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) acts as cellular attachment and entry mediator of HBV making it the main target of neutralizing antibodies to provide HBV immunity after infection or vaccination. Despite its central role in inducing protective immunity, there is however a surprising lack of comparative studies examining different HBsAgs and their ability to detect anti-HBs antibodies. On the contrary, various time-consuming complex HBsAg production protocols have been established, which result in structurally and functionally insufficiently characterized HBsAg.

Spatial mRNA expression patterns of orexin receptors in the dorsal hippocampus.

Orexins are wake-promoting neuropeptides that originate from hypothalamic neurons projecting to widespread brain areas throughout the central nervous system. They modulate various physiological functions via their orexin 1 (OXR1) and 2 (OXR2) receptors, including sleep-wake rhythm but also cognitive functions such as memory formation. Here, we provide a detailed analysis of OXR1 and OXR2 mRNA expression profiles in the dorsal hippocampus as a key region for memory formation, using RNAscope multiplex in situ hybridization.

Sensitive and error-tolerant annotation of protein-coding DNA with BATH.

Summary: We present BATH, a tool for highly sensitive annotation of protein-coding DNA based on direct alignment of that DNA to a database of protein sequences or profile hidden Markov models (pHMMs). BATH is built on top of the HMMER3 code base, and simplifies the annotation workflow for pHMM-based translated sequence annotation by providing a straightforward input interface and easy-to-interpret output. BATH also introduces novel frameshift-aware algorithms to detect frameshift-inducing nucleotide insertions and deletions (indels).

Availability of published evidence on coverage, cost components, and funding support for digitalisation of infectious disease surveillance in Africa, 2003-2022: a systematic review.

Background: The implementation of digital disease surveillance systems at national levels in Africa have been challenged by many factors. These include user applicability, utility of IT features but also stable financial support. Funding closely intertwines with implementations in terms of geographical reach, disease focus, and sustainability.
