Aim: Cardiac alternans is a dynamical phenomenon linked to the genesis of severe arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. It has been proposed that alternans is caused by alterations in Ca handling by the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), in both the SR Ca uptake and release processes. The hypertrophic myocardium is particularly prone to alternans, but the precise mechanisms underlying its increased vulnerability are not known.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess early anatomical and functional changes after brolucizumab intravitreal injection (BIVI) in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and macular neovascularization type 1 (MNV1).

Methods: A total of 24 eyes of 24 patients suffering from naïve AMD with MNV1 candidates to BIVI as per label with q12/q8 dosing regimen after the loading dose were enrolled in this prospective study. Main outcome measures during a 16-week follow-up period included changes in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), subfoveal subretinal fluid (SSRF) thickness (SSRFT), subfoveal sub-retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) fluid thickness (SSRPEFT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and pigment epithelial detachment (PED) maximum height (PED-MH).

Sarcopenia is a prevalent condition in patients with Crohn's disease (CD), representing an independent predictor factor for the development of major postoperative complications. Thus, a proper assessment of the muscle strength, by using different validated tools, should be deemed an important step of the clinical management of these patients. Patients with CD are frequently malnourished, presenting a high prevalence of different macro- and micro-nutrient deficiencies, including that of vitamin D.

Article Synopsis
  • There are instances where aTTP occurs alongside other autoimmune diseases, and this is the first report linking it with subacute thyroiditis.
  • A patient with aTTP proved resistant to standard treatments but showed improvement after adding caplacizumab, which works by preventing platelet clumping.

Purpose: To evaluate the changes of retinal capillary nonperfusion areas and retinal capillary vessel density of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus in patients with diabetes with diabetic macular edema treated with an intravitreal dexamethasone implant (IDI).

Methods: We enrolled 28 patients with diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema candidates to IDI. All patients underwent widefield optical coherence tomography angiography with PLEX Elite 9000 device with 15 × 9 mm scans centered on the foveal center at baseline, 1 month, 2 months, and 4 months after IDI.
