Pilot non dialysis chronic renal insufficiency study (P-ND-CRIS): a pilot study of an open prospective hospital-based French cohort.

Background: Before establishing a prospective cohort, an initial pilot study is recommended. However, there are no precise guidelines on this subject. This paper reports the findings of a French regional pilot study carried out in three nephrology departments, before realizing a major prospective Non Dialysis Chronic Renal Insufficiency study (ND-CRIS).

A cohort study of therapeutic prescriptions after the end of phytotherapy drug reimbursement by French Social Security.

Purpose: The reimbursement of phytotherapy drugs for the treatment of mild anxiety and insomnia ended in March 2006 in France. The aim of this study is to investigate the short-term impact of stopping phytotherapy reimbursement.

Methods: We monitored the prescriptions of 27,422 patients who received hypnotic and sedative phytotherapy drug treatment at least once in the 12 months preceding the end of reimbursement and made contact with their prescribing physician at least once in the following 12 months.

Deaf children reading fables: using ASL summaries to improve reading comprehension.

This study was a cooperative effort of two university-based reading educators and a reading teacher-librarian who is deaf. An intervention technique was designed based on studies emphasizing the importance of using American Sign Language (ASL) to build deaf children's background knowledge before they read materials that support the learning of English. The teacher used the ASL summary technique; that is, she signed a summary of a fable in ASL without giving the moral lesson before having the students read the fable in printed English.
