Objective: Existing literature documents high rates of experienced violence in asylum seekers. Despite this high prevalence, experiences of traumatic stress are neither necessary nor sufficient grounds for claiming asylum, without documented experiences of persecution. The aim of the current study is to better understand the role of co-occurring pre-migratory social determinants, stigma, and trauma on the experiences of persecution among asylum seekers in the United States.

Distress intolerance-a broad band dispositional variable has been shown to serve as a transdiagnostic risk factor for psychopathology. We investigated the predictive validity of the physical and emotional subscales of the Distress Tolerance Inventory (DTI) on behavioral responding (immersion time) and moment-to-moment subjective distress ratings to the Cold-Pressor Test. College students ( = 134) completed self-report questionnaires indexing physical and emotional distress tolerance and then completed a cold pressor challenge.

Introduction: Hippotherapy is a physical therapy tool that utilizes horseback riding to improve strength, coordination, gait, and balance. These benefits may be linked to similarities in kinematics and muscle activation between horseback riding and normal human gait, but this is not well represented in the literature, especially for muscle activation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between muscle activation of horseback riding and healthy human gait.

Article Synopsis
  • - Recent research in polymer physics examines macro-scale bead chains that mimic the diffusive behavior of microscopic polymers like DNA, using a novel setup with granular media and air fluidization to induce randomness in motion.
  • - The study utilizes X-ray imaging to analyze the dynamics of these bead chains, varying chain lengths and fluidizing airflow rates to explore different motion behaviors that deviate from expected Gaussian distributions.
  • - Additionally, Discrete Element Method simulations investigate the forces acting on the bead chains, with plans for future research to delve into different chain compositions and confinement geometries to better understand the physics of larger biopolymers.

Asylees (i.e., asylum seekers) have a higher prevalence of mental health concerns, particularly posttraumatic distress, than the general population due to both their exposure to traumatic experiences and prolonged uncertain status in a new country.
