Cleaning products have long been a focus of efforts to improve sustainability and assure safety for the aquatic environment when disposed of after use. The latter is addressed at ingredient level through environmental risk assessment, including in formal frameworks such as REACH. Nevertheless, in the context of programs to improve overall sustainability, stakeholders demand both environmental safety assurance and progress at product level.

Hydrothermolysis of D-glucose, cellobiose, and beta-cyclodextrin leads to the formation of small amounts of 3-deoxyhexonic acids. These acids are known to be produced by the alkaline degradation of carbohydrates. The formation under neutral hydrothermal conditions of the 3-deoxyhexonic acids provides evidence for the formation of 3-deoxy-D-erythro-hex-2-ulose, a compound that has been reported to play a role in both alkaline and acidic conversion of carbohydrates.

The chemical reactions involving carbon dioxide in mineral culture media are considered. A mathematic model is set up, based on published data, which is valid at pH values below 9, and in which the nonideality of the solution is taken into account. The crucial parameter is the constant expressing the equilibrium between carbon dioxide and bicarbonate, K(1).
