Rare case of anaplastic plasmacytoma in the sinonasal tract.

Background: Extramedullary plasmacytomas are tumors that develop from plasma cells and rarely express anaplastic features. To our knowledge, there have only been three reported cases of anaplastic plasmacytomas of the sinonasal tract in the English literature. We detail the fourth case.

Effect of quorum sensing agents on the growth kinetics of Pseudomonas spp. of raw milk origin.

Psychrotrophs, particularly strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens, dominate the microflora of refrigerated raw milk and secrete heat-stable extracellular enzymes (proteases and lipases) which survive pasteurisation and even UHT heat treatments and degrade the casein and fat components of raw milk causing a reduction in cheese yield, gelation of UHT milk and off flavours in many dairy products. These enzymes are usually produced in the late log/early stationary growth phases when the cell density is high. This fact indicated that induction of these enzymes may be a candidate for quorum sensing, a phenomenon by which bacteria can sense and respond to cell population size by means of chemical signals based on the homoserine lactone molecule.

CAMP factor homologues in Propionibacterium acnes: a new protein family differentially expressed by types I and II.

Analysis of the draft genome sequence of the opportunistic pathogen Propionibacterium acnes type strain NCTC 737 (=ATCC 6919) revealed five genes with sequence identity to the co-haemolytic Christie-Atkins-Munch-Peterson (CAMP) factor of Streptococcus agalactiae. The predicted molecular masses for the expressed proteins ranged from 28 to 30 kDa. The genes were present in each of the three recently identified recA-based phylogenetic groupings of P.
