The use of techniques that enable the urban reuse of treated sewage is essential to make cities more sustainable and resilient to water scarcity. The risks inherent to the inadequate domestic wastewater disposal, allied to the water growing demand, scarcity, and pollution problems, have highlighted the importance of adopting treatment techniques that not only target the sewage discharge, but also its reuse. For this reason, the objective of this study was to evaluate the best conditions of an electrocoagulation-flotation system for domestic wastewater treatment and urban reuse. We present an optical investigation of surface plasmon polaritons propagating along nanoscale Au-wires, lithographically defined on GaAs substrates. A two-axis confocal microscope was used to perform spatially and polarization resolved measurements in order to confirm the guiding of surface plasmon polaritons over lengths ranging from 5 to 20 μm along nanowires with a lateral dimension of only ≈ 100 nm. Finite difference time domain simulations are used to corroborate our experimental observations, and highlight the potential to couple proximal quantum emitters to propagating plasmon modes in such extreme subwavelength devices.

Semiconductor nanowires are widely considered to be the next frontier in the drive towards ultra-small, highly efficient coherent light sources. While NW lasers in the visible and ultraviolet have been widely demonstrated, the major role of surface and Auger recombination has hindered their development in the near infrared. Here we report infrared lasing up to room temperature from individual core-shell GaAs-AlGaAs nanowires.

Background: Management of pancreatic ascites with conservative medical therapy or surgery has met with limited success. Decompression of the pancreatic ductal system through transpapillary stent placement, an alternative strategy, has been reported in only a handful of cases of pancreatic ascites.

Methods: We reviewed all cases from 1994 to 1997 in which patients with pancreatic ascites underwent an endoscopic retrograde pancreatogram documenting pancreatic duct disruption with subsequent placement of a transpapillary pancreatic duct stent.
