Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is common in liver cirrhosis and is identified by psychometric tests. The portosystemic hepatic encephalopathy score (PHES) is the most widely used and serves as an inter-study comparator. PHES has not been standardised for use in the Danish population, where German normal values have been applied until now based on the notion that the populations are comparable.
