Introduction: We sought to streamline cataract surgery post-operative care when COVID-19 hit by discontinuing the 1-day post-operative visit. We wanted to know if this change was safe and beneficial to our patients by reducing patients' time and transportation burden, opening appointment slots allowing providers to see more patients and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By minimising intraoperative use of dispersive viscoelastic, increasing irrigation/aspiration time at the end of the surgery and using intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering medications such as carbachol, brimonidine and acetazolamide routinely, we posit that post-operative day 1 IOP spikes can be avoided, thereby eliminating the need for the 1st post-operative day visit.

Article Synopsis
  • This case series studied 10 participants with normal vision to see how different types of face masks affected their visual fields during testing.
  • Wearing duckbill N95 masks led to more accuracy errors in the lower visual field compared to surgical masks or no mask at all.
  • The results back up public health concerns that face masks may increase the risk of falls and accidents due to impaired vision.

The global increase in subfertility diagnosis and treatments and the rise of private equity investors concentrating on high profits based on in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatments raise profound societal and economic questions for stakeholders and patients. The question remains as to whose benefits will ultimately be greater when promoting high margins treatment options resulting from cross-border mergers and acquisitions of IVF clinics. This paper covers wide-ranging issues from the erroneously constructed UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence's (NICE) guidelines on treatment choices, the cost-effectiveness of treatments, the promotion of IVF, and add-ons where evidence remains minimal, the commercial size of the fertility industry.
