Malnutrition may result in abnormal biochemical and hematological indices. This planned prespecified analysis investigated the effects of a specialized oral nutritional supplement (ONS) on biochemical and hematological indices in community-dwelling older adults at risk of malnutrition. In the Strengthening Health in ELDerly through nutrition (SHIELD) study, 811 older adults aged 65 years and above took part in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-center study.

Background And Aims: Medical nutrition therapy is important for diabetes management. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of a diabetes-specific formula (DSF) on glycemic control and cardiometabolic risk factors in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Methods: Participants ( = 235) were randomized to either DSF with standard of care (SOC) (DSF group;  = 117) or SOC only (control group;  = 118).

Article Synopsis
  • Childhood undernutrition leads to serious health risks and socio-economic challenges, prompting a study on effective interventions.
  • The study, called SPROUT, tested an oral nutritional supplement (ONS) combined with dietary counseling (DC) against a DC-only group among undernourished children in Vietnam.
  • Results showed that the ONS+DC group experienced significantly greater improvements in weight, height, and overall health compared to the DC-only group, indicating a beneficial approach for addressing childhood undernutrition.

Background & Aims: Both during and after hospitalization, nutritional care with daily intake of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) improves health outcomes and decreases risk of mortality in malnourished older adults. In a post-hoc analysis of data from hospitalized older adults with malnutrition risk, we sought to determine whether consuming a specialized ONS (S-ONS) containing high protein and beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) can also improve Quality of Life (QoL).

Methods: We analyzed data from the NOURISH trial-a randomized, placebo-controlled, multi-center, double-blind study conducted in patients with congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, pneumonia, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Background: There is an increasingly strong association between sarcopenia and malnutrition in research findings. We aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults (≥ 65 years) at risk of malnutrition based on Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST).

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 811 participants.
