The effect of transfixation pins on the biomechanical properties of angled acrylic connecting bars.

With acrylic external-fixation frames for fracture repair the acrylic columns can be contoured to allow greater versatility in the placement of transfixation pins, thus minimizing damage to the surrounding soft tissue and making mandibular and transarticular fixation easier. However, contouring affects the stiffness and ultimate strength of the construct under axial compression. In this study, polymethylmethacrylate columns 21 mm in diameter angled at 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, or 90° with clamps were constructed.

Hemangiosarcoma within an intermuscular lipoma in a golden retriever dog.

A subcutaneous mass on the right pelvic limb of an 11-year-old neutered male golden retriever dog was surgically excised. A hemangiosarcoma included within an intermuscular lipoma was diagnosed upon histopathological examination. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first case report of this nature in a dog.

Complete longitudinal patellar fracture in a cat: A rare case.

Longitudinal patellar fractures in cats are extremely rare with only 1 other report of a comminuted longitudinal fracture for which pins and wires were placed in the patella for stabilization. This report describes the surgery and outcome of a strictly longitudinal patellar fracture in a cat.

'Lingering' opiate deaths? Concentration of opiates in medulla and femoral blood.

'Lingering death' cases occur when the circumstances of death indicate an opiate overdose, but measured opiate blood levels are only in the therapeutic range; death results from cardiac and respiratory depression. This study examined the relative concentration of opiates in femoral blood and in the medulla oblongata (sites for cardiac and respiratory control) from 41 cases to determine whether a difference in opiate concentration might explain lingering deaths. Opiates from blood and medulla were analyzed using GC-EI-MS in selective ion monitoring mode.
