A critical shortage of physicians is looming in the United States. The situation in Kentucky is especially dire, especially in rural areas. Class size constraints have resulted in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine (UK COM) unable to admit over 100 qualified Kentuckians each year.

Intensity Discriminability of Electrocutaneous and Intraneural Stimulation Pulse Frequency in Intact Individuals and Amputees.

Electrical stimulation of residual nerves can be used to provide amputees with intuitive sensory feedback. An important aspect of this artificial sensory feedback is the ability to convey the magnitude of tactile stimuli. Using classical psychophysical methods, we quantified the just-noticeable differences for electrocutaneous stimulation pulse frequency in both intact participants and one transradial amputee.

Academic outcomes of a community-based longitudinal integrated clerkships program.

Background: Longitudinal integrated clerkships (LICs) receive recognition internationally as effective, innovative alternatives to traditional block rotations (TBRs) in undergraduate medical education. No studies of LICs in the USA have assessed how students perform on all the standardized exams.

Aim: To compare performance on standardized tests of students in the first four years of LICs at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine-Asheville (UNC SOM-Asheville) with students from UNC SOM's Chapel Hill main campus in TBRs.
