Results obtained by acupuncture treatment of patients with rheumatic diseases were analysed. Clinical, serological and psychological parameters were evaluated at the beginning and end of treatment. Results showed variations in pain intensity, articular function, inflammation, anxiety and bodily condition.

The study was based on questionnaires completed by doctors and patients and patients' pictures of the acupuncture session. Early data reveal the importance of the doctor's personality and the doctor-patient relationship as well as the influence of the needle as a particular therapeutic medium with magic, symbolic and menacing connotations.
