Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) explosive trace detectors (ETDs) have become an integral part of security practices aimed at protecting the public, transportation, and facilities. Despite their widespread deployment, quality control procedures that can evaluate day-to-day instrument performance or differences among units of the same manufacture are in need for development. In this work, we describe the preparation of test materials (TMs) using inkjet printing that have fixed dosing levels of two explosives; 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN).

The background count rate of a 1-cm(3) quartz gas proportional counter (GPC) was investigated for measuring natural radioactivity levels of small samples. Using a new multiparameter digital counting system, spurious or afterpulses that contribute to background were identified by their pulse waveform and by a special event indicator defined by the time (<2000micros) between two successive pulses. With the GPC in coincidence with a low-background NaI(Tl) scintillation guard detector, the weighted mean and standard uncertainty anticoincidence counts per day (d(-1)) was 6.

An experimental design is described to estimate the fraction of secondary fine particle from the biogenic component of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere using radiocarbon isotopic abundance ratios. The method distinguishes between "modern" carbon (C), and "old" C of primary and secondary origins based on three components, condensed-phase organic carbon (OC), semi-volatile particulate compounds (SVOCs), and VOCs. The method depends on interpretation of diurnal and seasonal variation in OC, SVOC, and VOC concentrations.

To determine the relative inputs of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and black carbon (BC) in environmental samples from the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass, we have developed two independent analytical methods for determining the 14C abundance of PAHs and BC. The 5730 yr half-life of 14C makes it an ideal tracer for identifying combustion products derived from fossil fuels (14C-free) versus those stemming from modern biomass (contemporary 14C). The 14C abundance of PAHs in several environmental Standard Reference Materials was measured by accelerator mass spectrometry after extraction and then purification by high-performance liquid chromatography and preparative capillary gas chromatography.

Because of increased interest in the marine and atmospheric sciences in elemental carbon (EC), or black carbon (BC) or soot carbon (SC), and because of the difficulties in analyzing or even defining this pervasive component of particulate carbon, it has become quite important to have appropriate reference materials for intercomparison and quality control. The NIST "urban dust" Standard Reference Material(®) SRM 1649a is useful in this respect, in part because it comprises a considerable array of inorganic and organic species, and because it exhibits a large degree of ((14)C) isotopic heterogeneity, with biomass carbon source contributions ranging from about 2 % (essentially fossil aliphatic fraction) to about 32 % (polar fraction). A primary purpose of this report is to provide documentation for the new isotopic and chemical particulate carbon data for the most recent (31 Jan.
