Case study: chewing gum treatment of rumination in an adolescent with an eating disorder.

Rumination occurs frequently in children and adolescents with eating disorders, but few studies or case reports consider rumination an associated symptom. Fewer address related treatment issues. The authors describe successful treatment of rumination in a 16-year-old female adolescent using postmeal chewing gum.

Serum dopamine beta hydroxylase and maltreatment in psychiatrically hospitalized boys.

Fifty boys, hospitalized on a school-age and an adolescent unit in an intermediate length psychiatric hospital, were studied while off psychoactive medication to determine how serum dopamine beta hydroxylase (DBH) activity varies with different childhood maltreatment experiences. Childhood maltreatment was categorized according to onset (before 36 months old, between 36-72 months old and over 72 months old). Childhood maltreatment groups were compared with a group of psychiatrically hospitalized boys who had neither been abused nor neglected.

Low dopamine-beta-hydroxylase: a biological sequela of abuse and neglect?

Twenty-one psychiatrically hospitalized boys were studied while off psychoactive medication to determine if conduct disorder, solitary type, and abuse or neglect experiences correlated with low levels of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) activity. Preliminary results supported earlier findings that undersocialized types of conduct disorder in boys were correlated with low DBH activity. Possible or definite neglect or abuse before 36 months of age was correlated with low DBH activity.

Therapists' expectations for in-therapy roles of hospitalized patients.

Therapists' expectations with regard to in-therapy behavior of hospitalized patients were measured and factor analyzed. Five interpretable factors emerged and supported the conclusion that therapists' role expectations for patients complement patients' role expectations for therapists. Mean scores on the factors were independent of therapists' experience and professional training.

Affection for patients as a factor in therapists' outcome judgements.

This study was concerned with psychotherapists' evaluations of the outcome of therapy. Staff and resident psychiatrists employed in 23-item questionnaire to rate the seccess of psychotherapy with 85 of their inpatients. These were patients for whom psychotherapy constituted a significant part of the treatment that they received in the hospital.
