Article Synopsis
- Recent discussions on maintenance treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in remission have seen some groups abandon it, but a review of 14 trials shows that it leads to better relapse-free survival (RFS) rates, between 35% and 42% over 4 to 5 years.
- The German AMLCG's analysis compared three years of maintenance treatment to high-dose cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) and mitoxantrone in patients receiving intensified induction treatment, finding that maintenance yielded a higher RFS rate of 32% versus 25% for the other treatment.
- The findings suggest that maintenance treatment is still a significant part of care for adult AML patients, especially when combined with newer, more intense
