Evaluation of the Diabetes Regional Coordination Path using the Diabetes Coordination Notebook in community-based diabetes care.

Aims: A number of epidemiologic surveys have demonstrated that improving lifestyle habits, providing patient education, and regular screening of patients for early diabetic symptoms and complications through multidisciplinary collaboration are crucial for the management of diabetes.

Methods: To evaluate the Diabetes Coordination Notebook and the Diabetes Regional Coordination Path in management of diabetes, 217 community pharmacies conducted a survey by questionnaire in Gifu Prefecture, Japan.

Results: A reply to the questionnaire was obtained from 27,016 individuals, of whom 5,572 claimed to have diabetes or prediabetes.

Periodontal Disease May be Associated With the Occurrence of Diabetic Retinopathy: A Subgroup Analysis of The Survey of the Diabetes Coordination Notebook in Gifu.

Aims: A questionnaire survey of the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy was recently conducted in Japan. A subgroup analysis to examine the association of periodontal disease with diabetic retinopathy in subjects with diabetes and prediabetes was conducted.

Methods: The association of the presence of periodontal disease with the occurrence of diabetic retinopathy was examined using multivariate logistic regression analysis.

Background: Most paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) cases reported to date have been associated with lymphoproliferative neoplasms. Patients with PNP have autoantibodies against the plakin family (eg, envoplakin and periplakin). Antibodies against desmoglein 3 (Dsg3) and Dsg1, antigens for classic types of pemphigus, have also been reported to play an important role in the initial stage of PNP.

Increased in vitro release of interferon-gamma from ampicillin-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells in Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) was diagnosed in a 39-year-old woman, treated with ampicillin (4000-8000 mg daily), phenytoin (250 mg daily), and furosemide (20-40 mg daily) for 25, 21, and 20 d, respectively, before the appearance of the eruption. The lymphocyte stimulation test with the MTT [3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide] assay on ampicillin, phenytoin, and furosemide showed a low value of stimulation index, which indicated negative reactivity. An in vitro IFN-gamma release test was conducted on the patient with SJS and on two healthy controls.

[Effects of pesticides on cytokines production by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells--fenitrothion and glyphosate].

In patients with pesticides poisoning, human immune system seems to be damaged. However, the effects of pesticides on human immune system, especially on cytokines production, have not been understood well. We investigated the effects of fenitrothion (MEP), an organophosphorus insecticide, and glyphosate (GLP), a phosphorus containing amino acid-type herbicide, on cytokines production by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC).
