An important correlate of mental health problems is mentalizing capacity, which appears to be particularly influential during adolescence. However, quality of life has not been studied in relation to mentalizing capacity among adolescents. This study aimed to translate the Reflective Function Questionnaire for Youth (RFQY) into Hungarian, present its psychometric properties, and assess its relationship with demographic characteristics, psychopathology and quality of life.

Introduction: Parental reflective function is the ability of a parent to attribute mental states to their child and to themselves. In the English-speaking world, The Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (PRFQ; Luyten, Mayes, Nijssens and Fonagy, 2017) is widely used for the measurement of this construct, the adolescent version of which can be used by parents of children aged 12-18. The aim of our research was to adapt the adolescent version of The Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire to Hungarian language and to analyze its factor structure.

The present study investigated the cross-cultural variations in parents' views on the role of play in child development and the primary purpose of preschool education from Ethiopia and Hungary. It also examined the cross-cultural variations in preschoolers' executive functions (EF), the frequency of their engagement in home activities, and the role of these activities in the development of EF skills. Participants included 266 preschoolers (Ethiopia: 139 of which 44.

The purpose of the present study was to replicate and extend previous findings that depict a link between preschoolers' home experience and EFs. It also examined Hungarian parents' views about the purpose of preschool education and its relationship with their play beliefs. A total of 87 Hungarian preschoolers participated in neuropsychological testing of executive functioning (44 boys, 42 girls, one not reported; mean age = 62.

A growing number of studies support the theory that physical activity can effectively foster the cognitive function of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The present study examines the effect of acute moderate physical activity on the executive functions and attention performance of (1) typically developing children (without psychological, psychiatric or neurological diagnosis and/or associated treatment stated in their medical history); (2) treatment-naïve ADHD children; and (3) medicated children with ADHD. In the current study, a total sample of 150 (50 non-medicated, 50 medicated, and 50 typically developing) children between the ages of 6 and 12 took part in the experiment.

Although research has highlighted the importance of home experience and especially of play in early brain development, the value of this factor for executive function (EF) development has not received the attention it deserves. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the link between parental play beliefs and preschoolers' play frequency at home on the one hand and their EF skills on the other. Additionally, other types of home activities were also assessed.

The emerging literature reports that children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) show deficits in executive functioning. To date, the combination of drug therapy with certain evidence-based non-medication interventions has been proven to be the most effective treatment for ADHD. There is a gap in the literature regarding comparing the executive functions (EF) of treatment naïve and medicated children with ADHD with both each other and typically developing children.

In the present meta-analysis we examined the near- and far-transfer effects of training components of children's executive functions skills: working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. We found a significant near-transfer effect (g = 0.44, k = 43, p < .

The connection between physical activity and executive functions has recently started to emerge as a new focus of research within the field of attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder (ADHD). In the present paper we summarise the major findings of these studies concentrating specifically on paediatric population. We present the results of six studies that focus on the connection between acute physical activity and executive functions and seven others that examine the relationship between chronic physical activity and executive functions in children with ADHD.

Article Synopsis
  • Home parenteral nutrition has been available in Hungary since January 2013, specifically for patients with short bowel syndrome, focusing on personalized medicine.
  • The text discusses the treatment and nutrition strategies, particularly for severe cases involving jejunostomy, highlighting the challenges and outcomes of home feeding.
  • At the authors' care center, 12 patients (5 females and 7 males) are receiving this treatment, with their health metrics (like BMI and body composition) tracked over time and various underlying conditions contributing to their short bowel syndrome.

Gender differences favoring women in relation to awareness of the subjective (internal) world are well demonstrated but their origins are poorly understood. We trained 173 12-month-olds to visually fixate a video image in response to an internal cue (opening own mouth), external cue (seeing a face open its mouth), or both cues. Female infants showed significantly greater sensitivity than males to the internal cues suggesting that prioritization of internally accessible experience is already evident at one year of age.

Human infants grow up in environments populated by artifacts. In order to acquire knowledge about different kinds of human-made objects, children have to be able to focus on the information that is most relevant for sorting artifacts into categories. Traditional theories emphasize the role of superficial, perceptual features in object categorization.

Patients suffering from intestinal failure can receive home parenteral nutrition in several countries of the world since the end of the 1960s. In Hungary, intestinal failure patients can receive parenteral nutrition only in hospital, even if they can live in family or they are capable to work under certain circumstances because the present health financial system and legal environment do not allow home parenteral nutrition. This system is extremely uneconomical, reserves hospital beds and is opposing the European practice.

Acute pancreatitis is a dynamic, often progressive disease; 14-20% require intensive care in its severe form due to multiorgan dysfunction and/or failure. This review was created using systematic literature review of articles published on this subject in the last 5 years. The outcome of severe acute pancreatitis is determined by the inflammatory response and multiorgan dysfunction - the prognostic scores (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation, Glasgow Prognostic Index, Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment, Multi Organ Dysfunction Syndrome Scale, Ranson Scale) can be used to determine outcome.

In Hungary, epidemiological and clinical data regarding brain injury were rather scarce. The Hungarian Society for Neurotrauma aimed to make a nation-wide study about the number and the mortality of patients with severe head trauma, the organization of management, the diagnostics and monitoring in use, and finally about the clinical practice of management. A national survey was carried out with questionnaires asking about data of 2001, and a prospective, three-month-long data collection based on case studies was also executed in 2002.

Introduction: The contribution of brain edema to brain swelling in cases of traumatic brain injury remains a critical problem. In head injury, the swelling and eventual rise in intracranial pressure is a frequent cause of death, and in survivors the poor prognosis with sustained elevation of ICP has been well documented.

Objective: The objective this study was to evaluate the effect of controlled lumbar cerebrospinal fluid drainage in adult patients with refractory intracranial hypertension following severe brain injury.

Background: Subdural haemorrhage (SDH) is of high public health importance because of its frequency, high case fatality ratio (CFR) and the young age of affected population. Despite the fact that the effectivity of guideline based treatment has been improved in the last decade, the Hungarian praxis shows variable compliance for recommendations.

Objectives: The study aimed to describe the heterogeneity of the treatment effectivity (by geographically identifying the populations provided with appropriate or non-optimal level care), to determine the relationship between the institutional proxies quality and the results of treatment for SDH by linking the proxies properties to the patients' records.

Background: Considering that multiple aneurysms carry a high risk for fatal rupture, there is a need for complete treatment of all lesions in one surgical session using either unilateral-contralateral or bilateral approaches. Contralateral approaches have been used mainly for small anteriorly projecting middle cerebral and medially expanding ophthalmic types of aneurysms. They are limited by the narrow space for surgical manipulation, forced elevation of frontal lobes, and stretching of the olfactory nerves.

Status epilepticus is an emergency situation that can often lead to death or neurocognitive deficits despite adequate therapy is conducted. Etiology and prognosis can be widely heterogeneous. Knowledge of the basic pathophysiologic mechanisms has altered the definition of status epilepticus and the emphasis of therapy has also changed according to that.

Clinical observations and laboratory investigations suggest that gender and menstrual status modulate cerebrovascular reactivity. We prepared 7 groups of rabbits (I) males (II) oophorectomized untreated females, (III) testosterone treated oophorectomized females, (IV) superovulated females, (V) superovulated estrogen withdrawn females, (VI) estrogen treated oophorectomized females, and (VII) estrogen withdrawn females to mimic phases of the estrous cycle and compare cerebral basilar artery reactivity to serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) in vitro. Basilar artery sensitivity to 5-HT vasoconstriction was increased in oophorectomized, acutely estrogen withdrawn females (Group VII) when compared to estrogen maintained and the other groups (p < 0.

An in vitro animal model which examines the effects of sex hormone variations during the menstrual cycle on basilar artery reactivity is presented. Three groups of rabbits were utilized: a chronically depleted control group which received no further hormonal treatment after bilateral surgical oophorectomy (O), simulating menopause, and two groups of intact females, one of which was treated to mimic the estrogen and progesterone surge during the luteal phase (H) and the third group which was acutely estrogen and progesterone depleted after the luteal surges to simulate the immediate premenstrual state (W). We show that both acute and chronic estrogen and progesterone withdrawal significantly increase serotonin sensitivity (ED50) in basilar artery rings.

Preliminary experience with 150 consecutive cases of ruptured cerebral aneurysms operated on within 48 hours is reported. The rationale of this emergency procedure is to prevent early rerupture and also to prevent neurological ischaemic consequences of the subarachnoid haemorrhage likely to develop in the first week after a rupture. The acceptable outcome of the surgically treated cases (87% excellent and good outcome) has been favourably matched to those of a group of equal number of consecutive cases seen in suitable condition for surgery within 48 hours by medical personnel but that remained unoperated for various reasons.
