Background: Double-lumen tracheal tube (DLT) insertion can be managed with videolaryngoscopes such as the Glidescope or indirect laryngoscopes like the Airtraq DL. No study has compared both devices when a difficult intubation is predicted.

Objective: Our hypothesis was that the Glidescope is superior to the Airtraq for double-lumen tube insertion in patients with a predicted or known difficult airway.

Objectives: Spinal anaesthesia represents the technique of choice for elective caesarean section. The purpose of this study was to compare the puncture failure rates with 25, 26 or 27 gauge (G) pencil-point, Whitacre type (with introducer) needles during spinal anaesthesia for caesarean section.

Study Design: Prospective, randomised, experimental study in healthy subjects.

Background: Most studies of chronic postoperative pain focussed on major surgical procedures. Chronic postoperative pain occurred in 10% to 50% of patients and exhibited neuropathic features in 5% to 68% of cases. The objectives of this prospective single-centre study were to determine the rates of occurrence and associated factors of any chronic pain and of neuropathic chronic pain 1 year after orthopaedic surgery on the foot.

Introduction: Perioperative vitamin K antagonist management is an issue of concern in many countries. The availability of best practice guidelines meets health professionals' needs, but compliance is uncertain and should be assessed.

Materials And Methods: Our aim was to assess practitioner compliance with the guidelines on perioperative VKA management issued by the French National Authority for Health through a national register set up in partnership with the French College of Anaesthetists and Intensivists.

Objective: Percutaneous chest drainage guidelines were published in 2010 by the British Thoracic Society. On several points (insertion technique, drain size), they seem to differ from French practices. Our objectives were to evaluate practice of pleural drainage in French University surgical intensive care units (ICU's), and to compare it with the British guidelines.

Background: Tranexamic acid decreases total blood loss after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Total blood loss is the sum of external bleeding and bleeding into tissues, i.e.

Background: Heterogeneity and its causes must be assessed using meta-analyses (meta-analysis). Especially in meta-analysis dealing with treatment of acute postoperative pain, the type of surgery is a source of heterogeneity. We aimed to assess whether the type of surgery is considered a source of heterogeneity in meta-analysis and how it is taken into account in meta-analysis evaluating the efficacy of treatment of acute postoperative pain.

Objective: The variability of the medical information available on the Internet (MedInfoWeb) raises concern about its quality. There is no data about the quality of MedInfoWeb concerning epidural analgesia for labour (EAL). Our aims were to assess the quality of MedInfoWeb concerning EAL and to study the stability of MedInfoWeb and the ranking of website into search engine (SE) during 1year.

Background: Multimodal analgesia combining several non-opioid analgesics is recommended for pain control after surgery. In one study of total hip arthroplasty (THA), pain relief achieved by adding ketamine to the paracetamol-ketoprofen combination was statistically significant but remained inadequate in most patients. In two other studies, the analgesic effect of nefopam was synergistic with that of ketoprofen and additive with that of paracetamol.

Background: Chronic postoperative pain (CPOP) has been assessed after major orthopedic surgeries but not after carpal tunnel surgery (CTS). This study aimed at describing the evolution of nocturnal and diurnal pains during the year following CTS, and at looking for factors associated with CPOP.

Methods: Cohort of adult outpatients operated by one single surgeon, under regional anaesthesia (RA).

Background: In patients with severe brain injury, endotracheal suctioning (ETS) can increase intracranial pressure (ICP) and reduce cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP). The aim of this prospective, blinded clinical trial was to assess the effectiveness of aerosolized lidocaine to prevent increase of ICP induced by ETS in mechanically ventilated head-injured patients.

Methods: First, we measured the particle size of aerosolized lidocaine produced by a vibrating plate nebulizer.

Introduction: Mandibular nerve block is a simple and effective but rarely used technique. It decreases peri-operative pain in mandibular osteotomy. It improves surgical field visibility by decreasing bleeding.

Introduction: Several peripheral nerve block techniques (PNB) are performed for hand surgery. Their tolerance by patients or their efficacy are poorly described. We evaluated them for blocks at the wrist and at the brachial canal.

Objective: Perioperative gabapentine administration improves analgesia, reduces postoperative nausea and vomiting, but increases sedation. Pregabalin is also a gabapentinoid, with an improved bioavailability. This systematic review evaluates the analgesic effect and tolerance of perioperative pregabaline.

Aim: Tranexamic acid (TxA) reduces total blood losses (TBL) and allogenic transfusion (TH) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). TBL can be external (surgical field, drains), or hidden (haematomas). Haematomas induce pain and limit postoperative rehabilitation.

We report the case of a caesarean section under combined spinal and epidural anaesthesia in a pregnant 32-year-old woman with an hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. In these patients, variations of the ventricular load conditions may induce a cardiac inefficacy. In this context, the post-partum haemorrhage is a feared complication, prevent in part by oxytocine intravenously.

Introduction: The main procedure specific complication of sagittal split osteotomy of the mandibular ramus (SSOMR) is inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury. This can be produced by poor intraoperative visibility of the IAN due to bone bleeding. In our centre, mandibular nerve blocks (MNBs) are usually performed for intra- and post-operative analgesia.

Background: In reference textbooks describing axillary block, the ulnar, radial, and median nerves are located in a common sheath surrounding the axillary artery. In contrast, the musculocutaneous nerve is described as lying outside this sheath in the coracobrachialis muscle. In a recent case report of ultrasound-guided axillary block, the musculocutaneous nerve was joined to the median nerve outside this muscle.

Objective: To know: (1) how French public services of anaesthesia and critical care (ACC) have applied the new principles of hospital management and (2) whether or not it has impacted the different components of ACC.

There are no guidelines for the anaesthetic management of caesarean section in women with long QT syndrome; the description of myocardial ventricular repolarisation in healthy women during caesarean delivery could be a first step. The aim of this study was to describe modification of the QT interval, corrected for heart rate, and the interval between the peak and the end of the T-wave (Tpeak-Tend interval) during caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia. We studied 40 patients scheduled for caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia.

Background: Ketamine has been shown to have a morphine-sparing effect soon after surgery. Nevertheless, whether this effect still exists after being combined with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs and acetaminophen, and whether ketamine can decrease chronic pain after nononcologic surgery remain unclear. Thus, we designed a study to assess ketamine's effect on acute and chronic postoperative pain when combined with multimodal analgesia after total hip arthroplasty (THA).
