Cancer consists of heterogeneous cells that contain a small population of cells that possess stem cell properties; these cells, referred to as cancer stem cells (CSCs) or tumor-initiating cells, are involved in tumor progression and metastasis. Using a sphere-forming assay, canine mammary CSCs were found to be similar to human breast CSCs. Metabolic reprogramming has been recognized as a hallmark of various cancers.

A 5-year-old male miniature dachshund was presented with a dermal nodule on the left forelimb that increased to 5 mm in diameter over a 2-month period. Grossly, the nodule was firm, and both the external and cut surfaces were homogeneously pale pink in colour. Microscopically, the nodule was comprised of mainly plump endothelial cells and inflammatory cells; among the latter, lymphocytes were predominant, with few scattered plasma cells, mast cells and macrophages.

By means of a functional expression system and site-directed mutagenesis, we analyzed the role of the putative K(+)-binding site, Glu-345, located in the fourth transmembrane segment of the gastric H(+),K(+)-ATPase alpha-subunit. In the present study, we used several mutants, with alanine, isoleucine, leucine, glutamine, valine, lysine, and aspartic acid instead of Glu-345, and analyzed the H(+),K(+)-ATPase partial reactions of the mutants to determine the precise role of this residue. All the mutants except E345Q exhibited no H(+),K(+)-ATPase activity.

We studied the types of food, time of introduction, frequency and nutrient intake among 133 infants during the 1st year of life. A 24-hour dietary recall indicated that 42 different types of food, including mothers' milk, were offered directly or in suitable preparations. Breast- and mixed-fed infants were likely to receive more milk feedings than non-breast-fed infants.
