To evaluate the biological changes in tendons during the aging process, the present study examined the effect of aging on the tendon structure, distribution of collagen types I and III, and expression of tendon-associated genes, using flexor tendons in a mouse model. Histological assessment of the tendon structure and distribution of collagen types I and III were performed, and the expression of tendon-associated genes was evaluated in flexor digitorium longus tendons of young (8 weeks) and aged (78 weeks) female C57BL/6 mice. The results indicated that the Soslowsky score, based on the analysis of cellularity, fibroblastic changes, and collagen fiber orientation and disruption, was significantly increased, or worsened, in the tendons of the aged group compared with those in the young group.

Objectives: The diagnosis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) can be challenging to distinguish tumor cells from benign epithelium (BE). The aim of the present study was to set a minimal antibody panel to differentiate PDAC from contaminated BE in EUS-FNA specimens.

Acrolein shows a facile reactivity with the ε-amino group of lysine to form N(ε)-(3-formyl-3,4-dehydropiperidino)lysine (FDP-lysine) as the major product. In addition, FDP-lysine generated in the acrolein-modified protein could function as an electrophile, reacting with thiol compounds, to form an irreversible thioether adduct. Although oncogenic functions and the clinical significance of Wilms tumor 1 (WT1) have been extensively studied in acute leukemia, the regulatory mechanism of its transcription still remains to be determined. We found a significant correlation among the amounts of WT1, GATA-1 and GATA-2 mRNAs from leukemia and solid tumor cell lines. Overexpression and small interfering RNA (siRNA) transfection experiments of GATA-1 and GATA-2 showed that these GATA transcription factors could induce WT1 expression.

Silodosin (URIEF), a new so-called 3rd generation alpha-1 blocker, is widely expected to be effective and useful for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), due to its high specificity to alpha-1A receptor. We evaluated the efficacy of Silodosin, on 187 males 50 years old or over with the diagnosis of BPH. Silodosin significantly improved the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and quality of life (QOL) score from the day after administration was started.

A mass screening of subjects for prostate specific antigen (PSA) was conducted to investigate whether this method is effective in detection of early stage prostate cancer. We recently reported increased sphingosine kinase 1 (SPHK1) and decreased neutral sphingomyelinase 2 (NSMase2) gene expression in myelodysplastic syndromes and acute leukemia. This alteration is supposed to change the cellular sphingolipid metabolites; however, positive correlations were observed between daunorubicin (DA)-IC50 and the SPHK1 message but not between DA-IC50 and NSMase2 messages, when 16 different leukemia cell lines were used to analyze the relationship between gene expressions and chemosensitivity against DA. Using two cell lines with either the highest or lowest SPHK1 expression, cellular ceramides and sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) were quantified by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry.

The etiology of nocturia in 70 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) who had nocturia of two or more times were examined based on frequency volume charts (FVC). Nocturia was classified into four groups: nocturnal polyuria, low capacity, combined nocturia, and no evidence of abnormality. Nearly half of the cases had nocturnal polyuria only.
