Rare Spinocerebellar Ataxia Types in Canada: A Case Series and Review of the Literature.

Background: There is limited information on rare spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) variants, particularly in the Canadian population. This study aimed to describe the demographic and clinical features of uncommon SCA subtypes in Canada and compare them with international data.

Methods: We conducted a case series and literature review of adult patients with rare SCA subtypes, including SCA5, SCA7, SCA12, SCA14, SCA15, SCA28, SCA34, SCA35 and SCA36.

Development of clinical practice guidelines for rehabilitation after diagnosis for primary bone and soft tissue tumours.

Background And Aims: Clinical practice guidelines for rehabilitation in musculoskeletal oncology are lacking. Guidelines should include recommendation statements aimed at optimising care to enhance recovery and quality of life. The project aim was to provide a foundation of best practice based upon expert consensus and evidence.

Listening to children with lower limb loss: Rationale, design, and protocol for delivery of a novel globally applicable research toolkit-Prosthetic user needs, quality of life, pain, and physical function.

Introduction: Rehabilitation after childhood lower limb loss is complex and dependent on multiple stakeholders and environmental factors. While research with adults underscores the importance of involving prosthetic limb users and caregivers in discussions to drive innovation, children are often excluded or not effectively engaged. This protocol lays out the development and implementation protocol for an internationally applicable research toolkit which has been designed and evaluated around the essential presence of the child.

The landscape of Functional Outcome Measures Used in Patients with Bone Sarcoma of the Lower Extremity or Pelvis: A Systematic Review.

This systematic review provides a structured overview of the measurement instruments of functional outcome used in lower extremity and pelvic bone sarcoma patients. We identified 42 unique instruments covering 18 distinct functional outcome constructs with most studies measuring constructs within the activity domain of the International Classification of Functioning, disability, and health. The MusculoSkeletal Tumor Society 1993 and 1987 score, Toronto Extremity Salvage Score, and range of motion instruments were the measurement instruments most commonly used.

Hybrid Dorsal Preservation Rhinoplasty: Reediting an Aesthetic Dorsum.

Background: The prerequisite of a well-shaped dorsum with proper dorsal aesthetic lines that needs no modifications in its width and symmetry is key to letdown and push-down techniques as classically described. The common current concept is that total preservation of the middle vault is obligatory. This, however, obviously limits the indications, since nasal dorsum with natural aesthetic dorsal lines per se is relatively few.

Advancements in sunscreen formulations: integrating polyphenolic nanocarriers and nanotechnology for enhanced UV protection.

Sunscreens are essential in protecting the skin from harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR). These formulations, designed to absorb, block, or scatter UVR, offer vital protection against skin aging, sunburns, and the development of skin cancers like melanomas. However, some sunscreens, especially those containing organic/chemical compounds, can cause allergic reactions.

Functional Status in Peripheral Arterial Disease: Rehabilitated Versus Nonrehabilitated.

Background: To analyze patient perception of functional status related to activity and participation of rehabilitated and nonrehabilitated individuals with peripheral arterial disease.

Methods: Cross-sectional study assessing the activity and participation domain using the Human Activity Profile (HAP) questionnaire and the Participation Scale, respectively. Groups were compared using Chi-squared test and unpaired t-test.

Feasibility of using low-cost markerless motion capture for assessing functional outcomes after lower extremity musculoskeletal cancer surgery.

Background: Physical limitations are frequent and debilitating after sarcoma treatment. Markerless motion capture (MMC) could measure these limitations. Historically expensive cumbersome systems have posed barriers to clinical translation.

An Integrated Computational and Experimental Approach to Formulate Tamanu Oil Bigels as Anti-Scarring Agent.

Tamanu oil has traditionally been used to treat various skin problems. The oil has wound-healing and skin-regenerating capabilities and encourages the growth of new skin cells, all of which are helpful for fading scars and hyperpigmentation, as well as promoting an all-around glow. The strong nutty odor and high viscosity are the major disadvantages associated with its application.

Angiodysplasia of the appendix: a diagnostic challenge and the importance of colonoscopy.

The case report discusses the challenges in diagnosing gastrointestinal bleeding of unknown origin, with angiodysplasia (AD) of the appendix being a rare cause. The report presents a case of a man in his late 60s who presented with vomiting, diarrhoea and rectal bleeding. As a result of the bleeding, the patient developed a type II myocardial infarction (MI), which had to be simultaneously managed further complicating the diagnostic process.

Influence of excessive daytime sleepiness on the treatment adherence of obstructive sleep apnea.

Objectives: To compare positive airway pressure (PAP) adherence between patients with or without excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in mild, moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Methods: Patients ≥18 years diagnosed with OSA in 2018 and 2019, without previous history of PAP usage and with adherence registration in the first medical consultation after treatment initiation, were included. EDS was defined as a score of ≥10 on the Epworth Scale.

Variation in sociodemographic, clinical and functional characteristics of patients with chronic venous insufficiency in a single public health center.

Objectives: Describe and analyze the sociodemographic, clinical and functional characteristics of individuals with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and compare the clinical severity with levels of mobility.

Methods: Exploratory cross-sectional study in a single public health center. The study cohort comprised 99 individuals.

Cation recognition controlled by protonation or chemical reduction: a computational study.

To control biochemical processes, non-covalent interactions involving cations are activated by protons or electrons. In the present study, the bonding situation between: (i) carboxylic acid or (ii) ferrocene-functionalized crown ether derivatives and cations (Li, Na or K) has been elucidated and, mainly, tuned by the substitution of hydrogen atoms by electron donor (-NH) or acceptor (-NO) groups. The deprotonation of the carboxyl groups improves the interaction with the cations through more favorable electrostatic O⋯cation interactions.

Fulminant Extra- And Intracranial Arteriovenous Thrombosis And Non-aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Following COVID-19 Infection.

Purpose: Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with increased risk of stroke and intracranial hemorrhage. This first report of fulminant panvascular arteriovenous thrombosis with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in a post-COVID-19 infection is attributed to extensive arteriovenous inflammation leading to arterial rupture following vasculitis.

Case Report: We report a rare case of extensive extra- and intra-cranial cerebral arteriovenous thrombosis following COVID-19 infection, presenting as fatal non-aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Return to sports following lower limb musculoskeletal tumor surgery-A systematic review.

Background: Survivors of primary malignant musculoskeletal tumors often face long-term disability. Clinicians at present are unable to provide evidence-based advice about returning to sports, which is important for active patients.

Purposes: Identify patients returning to sports.

Validating the Efficacy of Two Burr-Hole Craniostomy over Mini-Craniotomy for Chronic Subdural Hematoma Drainage.

 There is an increasing incidence of chronic subdural hematoma due to extended life expectancy and associated trauma and fall risk. This retrospective study evaluates the efficacy of two burr-hole craniotomy over mini-craniotomy.  Sixty-five patients were recruited over 2 years, of which 56 were male and 9 were females.

Assessing efficacy of instructor based orientation to donning doffing protocols and modifications to doffing area infrastructure in reducing SARS-CoV-2 infection among Doctors assigned to COVID-19 patient care.

Background: We assess the efficacy of orientation programmes for doctors of proper donning, doffing techniques for personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe practices inside the COVID-19 hospital in reducing the COVID-19 infection rate among doctors.

Methods: A total of 767 resident doctors and 197 faculty visits on weekly rotation were recorded over a six month period. Doctors were guided through orientation sessions before their entry into the COVID-19 hospital from 1 August 2020.

Demographics and Clinical Characteristics of Autosomal Dominant Spinocerebellar Ataxia in Canada.

Background: Autosomal dominant (AD) spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) encompass a large group of rare disorders, which occurs in individuals of different ethnic backgrounds. To date, demographics, and clinical descriptions of AD SCA in Canada are lacking.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients with a genetically confirmed diagnosis of AD SCAs was performed at five tertiary centers across Canada in the provinces of Quebec, Alberta, and Ontario.

Male microbiota-associated metabolite restores macrophage efferocytosis in female lupus-prone mice via activation of PPARγ/LXR signaling pathways.

Systemic lupus erythematosus development is influenced by both sex and the gut microbiota. Metabolite production is a major mechanism by which the gut microbiota influences the immune system, and we have previously found differences in the fecal metabolomic profiles of lupus-prone female and lupus-resistant male BWF1 mice. Here we determine how sex and microbiota metabolite production may interact to affect lupus.
