Background: The use of both clinical factors and social determinants of health (SDoH) in referral decision-making for case management may improve optimal use of resources and reduce outcome disparities among patients with diabetes.
Objective: This study proposes the development of a data-driven decision-support system incorporating interactions between clinical factors and SDoH into an algorithm for prioritizing who receives case management services. The paper presents a design for prediction validation and preimplementation assessment that uses a mixed methods approach to guide the implementation of the system.
Women describe a loss of autonomy during childbirth as a contributing factor to labor dissatisfaction. Shared decision-making with choice, option, and decision talk may improve satisfaction. Nurses ( = 29) received education on supporting women's autonomy with a standardized communication tool (SUPPORT) to facilitate shared decision-making and create an evolving birth plan.

However, the role of diet in chronic pain is poorly understood. Of particular interest is the Western-style diet, enriched with ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) that accumulate in membrane phospholipids and oxidise into pronociceptive oxylipins.

Summary: The department of pharmacy's COVID-19 pandemic response included successful planning and implementation of measures to maintain pharmacy operations and minimize COVID-19 exposure of patients and staff. These measures included ensuring adequate personnel staffing using flexible staffing solutions, ongoing assessment of supply chain integrity, and continuation of integrated clinical pharmacy services 24/7 throughout the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Introduction: Comprehensive mRNA sequencing is a powerful tool for conducting unbiased, quantitative differential gene expression analysis. However, the reliability of these data is contingent on the extraction of high-quality RNA from samples. Preserving RNA integrity during extraction can be problematic, especially in tissues such as skin with dense, connective matrices and elevated ribonuclease expression.

To address this gap, we used a murine model of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) of the tongue to investigate changes in response properties of trigeminal afferent neurons. Using this model, we developed an ex vivo method for single neuron recordings of the lingual nerve from isolated tongue tissue.

In a separate accompanying article we discuss surgical, ethical, and psychosocial issues concerned in body-to-head transplantation (BHT) [1].
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTransplanting a head and brain is perhaps the final frontier of organ transplantation. The goal of body-to-head transplantation (BHT) is to sustain the life of individuals who suffer from terminal disease, but whose head and brain are healthy. Ideally BHT could provide a lifesaving treatment for several conditions where none currently exists.

The aim of this study was to identify factors contributing to clinician time spent in non-reimbursable activity on an inpatient pediatric consultation-liaison (C-L) service. A retrospective study was conducted using inpatient C-L service data on 1,246 consecutive referrals. For this patient population, the strongest predictor of level of non-reimbursable clinical activity was illness chronicity and the number of contacts with C-L service clinicians during their hospital stay.

We have previously shown that 5 wk chronic intermittent cold (CIC) stress induced a reversal-learning deficit in rats, associated with reduced serotonergic transmission in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) that was restored by chronic treatment with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). However, the mechanisms underlying the beneficial cognitive effects of chronic SSRI treatment are currently unknown.

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) are a group of fatal neurodegenerative diseases that affect animals as well as humans. The oldest of these diseases is Scrapie seen in sheep. Scrapie is caused by an altered form (PrP(sc)), capable of inducing "self-replication" of the normal host prion protein (PrP(c)).

In colon cancer and other epithelial tumors, MUC1 is overexpressed and hypoglycosylated. Antibodies specific for this "tumor form" of MUC1 are found in cancer patients.

Critics contend that the risks of lifelong immunosuppression do not justify the benefits of this new non-life-saving reconstructive procedure, whereas proponents argue that they do. Absent from this debate are the opinions of individuals with real-life experiences with the risks and benefits associated with this new treatment.

Proponents of this new treatment contend that the benefits outweigh the risks, while the critics argue they do not. This debate has been presented in great detail in the bioethics literature but has not been brought to the attention of the plastic surgery community.

Methods: North American patients, 6-17 years old at study entry (N = 1,312) and with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,4th edition (DSM-IV) ADHD, were studied under open-label atomoxetine treatment. Sixty-one were studied up to 5 years.
Human face transplantation is now a clinical reality. The surgical techniques necessary to perform these procedures have been used routinely in reconstructive microsurgery for many years. From an immunological standpoint since face and hand contain mostly the same tissues it is reasonable to assume that the same immunosuppressive regimen found to be effective in human hand transplants should also work in face transplantation.

Background: An important issue in pediatric pharmacology is the determination of whether medications affect cardiac rhythm parameters, in particular the QT interval, which is a surrogate marker for the risk of adverse cardiac events and sudden death. To evaluate changes while on medication, it is useful to have a comparison of age appropriate values while off medication. The present meta-analysis provides baseline ECG values (i.

Background: Immunosuppression-related risks are foremost among ethical concerns regarding facial transplantation. However, previous risk estimates are inaccurate and misleading, because they are based on data from studies using different immunosuppression regimens, health status of the transplant recipients, tissue composition, and antigenicity. This review provides a comprehensive risk assessment for facial transplantation based on comparable data of immunosuppression, recipient health status, and composition and antigenicity of the transplanted tissue.

Facial transplantation could provide an excellent alternative to current treatments for facial disfigurement caused by burns, trauma, cancer extirpation, or congenital birth defects. This article discusses the major technical, immunologic, psychosocial and ethical hurdles that have been overcome to bring facial transplantation from an idea to a clinical reality by providing the reader with a chronologic overview of the research and events that have led this exciting new treatment into the clinical arena.

To quantitatively assess the risks versus benefits in larynx transplantation, we used a questionnaire-based survey (Louisville Instrument For Transplantation [LIFT]) to measure the degree of risk individuals are willing to accept to receive different types of transplantation procedures.
Methods: The LIFT contains 237 standardized questions incorporating standard gamble and time tradeoff outcome measures as well as questions assessing body image perception, depression, self-esteem, optimism, socially desirable responding, and demographics.
