This study analyzes galectin-1, -3, and -9 serum concentrations in breast cancer patients through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) against the characteristics of the patient and the tumor such as stage, molecular subtype, and receptor expression. Galectin-9 was found to be statistically significantly increased in HER2-enriched tumors and reduced in patients with hormone-receptor-positive tumors.

Prognostic factors and survival analysis of Hurthle cell carcinoma: A population-based study.

Background: Hurthle cell carcinoma is a rare type of differentiated thyroid cancer and historically associated with a worse prognosis. The aim of this study was to define the demographic and socioeconomic factors, tumor characteristics, and surgical treatment status associated with Hurthle cell carcinoma survival using the most recent population-level data.

Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was queried for adult patients (>18 years of age) diagnosed with Hurthle cell carcinoma from 2000 to 2018.

Acetaminophen Disrupts the Development of Pharyngeal Arch-Derived Cartilage and Muscle in Zebrafish.

Acetaminophen is a common analgesic, but its potential effects on early embryonic development are not well understood. Previous studies using zebrafish have described the effects of acetaminophen on liver development and physiology, and a few have described gross physiological and morphological defects. Using a high but non-embryonic lethal dose of acetaminophen, we probed for defects in zebrafish craniofacial cartilage development.

Mutations Correlate with Higher Galectin Levels and Brain Metastasis in Breast and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

To investigate a potential role for galectins as biomarkers that enable diagnosis or prognostication of breast or non-small cell lung cancer, the serum levels of galectins -1, -3, -7, -8, and -9 of cancer patients determined by ELISA assays were compared to the mutation status of 50 known cancer-critical genes, which were determined using multiplex PCR in tumors of the same patients. Mutations in the proto-oncogene, which codes for the c-Kit protein, a receptor tyrosine kinase, correlated with higher levels of galectins -1, -3, -8, and -9 in breast cancer patients and galectin-1 in non-small cell lung cancer patients. Mutations in the gene were more likely found in brain metastases from both of these primary cancers.

Our study explored the utilization of B-Cell Lymphoma 6 (BCL6) and Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) as potential biomarkers in serum, plasma, urine, and cervical mucus for a non-invasive diagnostic test for endometriosis. BCL6 was chosen based on its previously reported elevated expression in endometrial biopsies, and SIRT1 is co-expressed and upregulated in the endometrium of women with endometriosis.

Participants viewed a three-dimensional (3D) virtual reality (VR) environment with a stimulus object (red ball) placed at different egocentric distances. Participants reported whether the object was reachable while in a standard pose as well as in two separate active balance poses (yoga tree pose and toe-to-heel pose).

Because of the known interactions of proteases with cellular functions, we hypothesized that RV 3C protease is sufficient for cytokine up-regulation.

Reliability in dream research: a methodological note.

The coefficients of internal consistency and retest reliability had been rarely investigated within the methodology of dream content analysis. Analyzing a dream series of elderly, healthy persons obtained from weekly telephone interviews, the internal consistency of a series of 20 dreams and retests after 4 or 22 weeks, respectively, had been computed. The findings indicate that dream recall and dream length are quite stable, but dream characteristics such as bizarreness and emotional tone underlie large intraindividual fluctuations.

Xenotransplantation of human liver cells is an expanding field in need of new and precise quantitative techniques. "Real time" PCR is a sensitive and accurate method of quantifying picogram quantities of DNA. We used "real time" PCR with primers complementary to the human alpha-1-antitrypsin gene to assess the efficiency of engraftment of human liver cells transplanted into immunotolerant RAG-1-/- mice.

A preliminary study of dream-telling among mentally healthy elderly: no adverse effects on life or sleep quality.

While there have been several studies about dreams and dreaming among the elderly, there does not seem to have been any study of the effects of regular dream-telling (without interpretation). Listening to dreams could become a regular part of caring for the elderly and infirm. The effects of regular dream-telling in mentally healthy elderly clinical research volunteers were measured on several variables using standardized testing and self-report: life satisfaction, intrapsychic boundaries, sleep quality, sleep duration, dream recall, dream tone, and dream epoch, and were compared with two control groups.

In some cell types, the characteristically slow growth of HAV may be due to inefficient viral translation. We investigated whether this is true in MRC-5 cells, which are used for vaccine production.

Purpose: CD30-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) has been described in adults with HIV-1 infection but is extremely rare in HIV-1-infected infants and children.

Progress toward the development of a genetically engineered attenuated hepatitis A virus vaccine.

Mutations which positively affect growth of hepatitis A virus in cell culture may negatively affect growth in vivo. Therefore, development of an attenuated vaccine for hepatitis A may require a careful balancing of mutations to produce a virus that will grow efficiently in cells suitable for vaccine production and still maintain a satisfactory level of attenuation in vivo. Since such a balance could be achieved most directly by genetic engineering, we are analyzing mutations that accumulated during serial passage of the HM-175 strain of hepatitis A virus in MRC-5 cell cultures in order to determine the relative importance of the mutations for growth in MRC-5 cells and for attenuation in susceptible primates.
