Heron hepatitis B viruses (HHBVs) in three subspecies of free-living great blue herons (Ardea herodias) from Florida, USA, were identified and characterized. Eight of 13 samples were positive in all assays used, whereas sera from egrets, which are also members of the family Ardeidae, were negative in the same assays. Comparative phylogenetic analysis of viral DNA sequences from the preS/S region of previously reported and novel HHBV strains isolated from captive grey herons (Germany) and free-ranging great blue herons (USA), respectively, revealed a strong conservation (95 % sequence similarity) with two separate clusters, implying a common ancestor of all strains.

The goal of this study was to determine whether the 3-D porous character of the PES surface affected human endothelial cell morphology and functions. Freshly isolated human endothelial cells from the skin (HDMEC), from the lung (HPMEC) and from umbilical cords (HUVEC) and two human endothelial cell lines, HPMEC-ST1.

Fast gamma oscillations, often at 40 Hz, have been demonstrated throughout the brain including the thalamus, auditory, visual and motor cortices. The function of gamma rhythms is elusive, but several authors have hypothesized that they contribute to the "binding" of diverse information into a single coherent percept, and to the synchronization of movement. In skeletal muscle a "Piper rhythm" around 40 Hz is commonly observed during maximal voluntary contraction, and has been shown to correlate with activity of similar frequency in a limited area of contralateral motor cortex.

Using the duck hepatitis B virus as a model, we first established a sensitive binding assay for both virions and subviral particles and subsequently elucidated the characteristics of the early viral entry steps. The infection itinerary was found to initiate with the attachment of viral particles to a low number of binding sites on hepatocytes (about 10(4) per cell).

Without MsbA present, bacterial cells accumulate a toxic amount of lipid A within their inner membranes. A crystal structure of MsbA was recently obtained that provides an excellent starting point for functional dynamics studies in membranes [Chang, and Roth (2001) Science 293, 1793-1800].

The observation of clusters of hepadnavirus-infected cells both in vivo and in primary hepatocytes neither proves the first mechanism nor excludes the second. In order to test which mechanism, if not both, is used by hepatitis B viruses in order to spread, we used primary duck hepatocytes and duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) as an infection model.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFMotion-induced blindness (MIB) is a phenomenon, perhaps related to perceptual rivalry, where stationary targets disappear and reappear in a cyclic mode when viewed against a background (mask) of coherent, apparent 3-D motion. Since MIB has recently been shown to share similar temporal properties with binocular rivalry, we probed the appearance-disappearance cycle of MIB using unilateral, single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)--a manipulation that has previously been shown to influence binocular rivalry. Effects were seen for both hemispheres when the timing of TMS was determined prospectively on the basis of a given subject's appearance-disappearance cycle, so that it occurred on average around 300 ms before the time of perceptual switch.

It is the key for understanding pathological changes, including PC, to consider the subdivision of the prostate into anatomically and functionally distinguishable zones, especially the transitional zone (TZ) and the peripheral zone (PZ). The pseudoneoplastic hyperplasia of the TZ, combined with inflammatory consequences and age-related changes, forms a differential diagnostic challenge to both clinico-radiological diagnosis and macroscopic and microscopic examination.

Materials And Methods: Over a period of three years, 446 breast tumors were ultrasonographically examined by two experienced medical doctors.
Objective: A double-randomized, blinded crossover trial was performed to assess the efficacy of ELA-Max (4% liposomal lidocaine) as compared with eutectic mixture of local anesthetics (EMLA) for pain relief during pediatric venipuncture procedures. Safety was assessed by evaluation for topical or systemic effects and measurement of serum lidocaine concentrations.
Methods: A total of 120 children who were scheduled for repeat venipuncture for non-study-related reasons at 2 sites participated in the study.

Introduction: The antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APA) is a potentially life-threatening disease in pregnancy, associated with spontaneous abortion, intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), preeclampsia and foetal death in utero. One of the sequelae of the antiphospholipid-antibodies is an impaired uteroplacental circulation. We present a case where we diagnosed an antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APA) on the basis of a highly pathological Doppler flow in both uterine arteries.

The prune-belly syndrome (PBS) consists of abdominal wall distention with deficiency of the abdominal wall musculature, urinary tract abnormalities, and cryptorchidism. The impaired drainage of the bladder leads to oligohydramnios and pulmonary hypoplasia. We present 4 cases of PBS diagnosed by prenatal sonography.

Doppler examinations of the umbilical artery, both uterine arteries, and the fetal middle cerebral artery were performed in the third trimester in 18 patients with pregnancy induced hypertension, 52 patients with preeclampsia, and 32 patients with HELLP syndrome and the results were correlated with the parameters fetal outcome. For 74% of the patients this was the first pregnancy, in 93% of the cases a cesarean section was necessary; 66% of the newborn babies were dystrophic and 90% of them were born prematurely. The blood flow in one uterine artery was restricted in 95% of all 102 pregnant women, only 5% did not show any pathological findings.

The present study was designated to test the hypothesis that blockade of brain AT(1) receptors improves the recovery from focal cerebral ischemia and reduces expression of AP-1 transcription factors c-Fos and c-Jun, which have been associated with programmed cell death and neurodegeneration.
Methods: Experiments were carried out in normotensive male Wistar rats.
Objective: In contrast to tubal abortions, viable ectopic pregnancies in color Doppler ultrasonography exhibit a signal-intensive ring around the gestational sac. We investigated the underlying differences in implantation and placentation.
Study Design: Histologic sections of fallopian tubes carrying viable tubal pregnancies (13 patients) and tubal pregnancies that aborted (8 patients) were immunostained for cytokeratin, MIB-1, CD-34, and CD-68.

The Prune Belly Syndrome combines dilation of the bladder and a laxity of the abdominal wall, and is of unknown etiology. The sequelae are a pulmonary hypoplasia and a deterioration of the kidney function, which determine prognosis. Via early ultrasound diagnosis, intrauterine application of a vesico-amniotic shunt can be performed and can improve survival rates.

The aim of our study was to clarify whether at this early stage in gestation the diagnosis of the fetal condition should be extended to include the monitoring of the umbilical vein and to assess the possibility of making predictions about the further course of pregnancy. 50 pregnant patients without complications, 21 patients later developing pregnancy-induced hypertension/intrauterine growth retardation, 16 pregnancies with fetal anomalies, and 4 pregnancies with chromosomal aberrations were scanned with color Doppler sonography to determine the flow spectra of the umbilical vein in a free loop.

We report on Doppler sonographic findings of a dialysis patient with renal anemia during otherwise uncomplicated pregnancy. Uteroplacental and fetoplacental flow relationships before, as well as after the dialysis treatments during the course of the pregnancy were in the normal range. The favorable flow condition in the utero- and fetoplacental circulation was associated with a low hematocrit.
