Background: Cigarette smoking is known to affect muscle function and exercise capacity, including muscle fatigue resistance. Most studies showed diminished cross-sectional area and fibre type shifting in slow-twitch muscles such as the soleus, while effects on fast-twitch muscles were seldom reported and the differential responses between muscle types in response to exposure to cigarette smoke (CS) were largely unknown. Background: We previously identified a panel of sputum DNA methylation that predicts lung aging and risk for lung cancer.

Research Question: Can the sputum methylation panel be used as a readout to derive a dietary pattern beneficial for lung health? Is this dietary pattern associated with various subjective and objective lung health phenotypes? Does this relationship vary among people who currently smoke (current smokers) vs previously smoked (former smokers)?

Study Design And Methods: Using the Lovelace Smoker Cohort (LSC), we employed the LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) regularized Poisson regression to define a dietary pattern for sputum. Associations of the dietary pattern with objective and subjective lung health measurements were examined using generalized linear and Cox models in the LSC and the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening trial.

Populations of forest trees exhibit large temporal fluctuations, but little is known about the synchrony of these fluctuations across space, including their sign, magnitude, causes and characteristic scales. These have important implications for metapopulation persistence and theoretical community ecology. Using data from permanent forest plots spanning local, regional and global spatial scales, we measured spatial synchrony in tree population growth rates over sub-decadal and decadal timescales and explored the relationship of synchrony to geographical distance.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a lethal, immune-mediated disease in cats caused by feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), a biotype of feline coronavirus (FCoV). In contrast to feline enteric coronavirus (FECV), which exclusively infects enterocytes and causes diarrhea, FIPV specifically targets macrophages, resulting in the development of FIP.
