Habitual isomaltulose intake reduces arterial stiffness associated with postprandial hyperglycemia in middle-aged and elderly people: a randomized controlled trial.

Endothelin-1 (ET-1), produced by vascular endothelial cells, plays a pivotal role in the regulation of vascular tone. Isomaltulose, a naturally occurring sweetener and structural isomer of sucrose, reduces postprandial hyperglycemia, but its effect on arteriosclerosis due to hyperglycemia is unknown. The effects of 12 weeks of isomaltulose administration on ET-1 levels, a peptide that regulates arterial stiffness, blood pressure, and vascular tone, were tested before and after an oral glucose tolerance test.

Background: Low-volume high-intensity interval training (HIIT) for weight loss has become prevalent in recent years, with increased excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) as the mechanism. However, the influence of the menstrual cycle on EPOC and fat oxidation following low-volume HIIT is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the menstrual cycle on the increase in EPOC and fat oxidation after low-volume HIIT.

Dissociated coupling between cerebral oxygen metabolism and perfusion in the prefrontal cortex during exercise: a NIRS study.

The present study used near-infrared spectroscopy to investigate the relationships between cerebral oxygen metabolism and perfusion in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) during exercises of different intensities. A total of 12 recreationally active men (age 24 ± 6 years) were enrolled. They performed 17 min of low-intensity exercise (ExL), followed by 3 min of moderate-intensity exercise (ExM) at constant loads.

Influence of Menstrual Cycle on Leukocyte Response Following Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage.

We investigated the influence of the menstrual cycle (MC) on leukocyte response after exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). During the early follicular (E-FP, = 12) or mid-luteal phase (M-LP, = 12), 24 untrained females with eumenorrhea performed 60 eccentric exercises using nondominant arms. Blood samples were collected at pre- and 4, 48, and 96 h postexercise to analyze estradiol and progesterone concentrations, leukocyte count and fractionation, and creatine kinase (CK) activity.

The Effect of Co-Ingestion of Carbohydrate with Milk after Exercise in Healthy Women: Study Considering the Menstrual Cycle.

This study aimed to assess the effects of co-ingestion of carbohydrate with milk (MILK) and isocaloric carbohydrate beverage (CHO) on post-exercise recovery and subsequent exercise capacity, considering the menstrual cycle. This study included 12 women with regular menstrual cycles who completed four test days, which started with glycogen-depleting exercise using a cycle ergometer in the early follicular phase (EF) and late follicular phase (LF), followed by 240 min of recovery from the ingestion of 200 mL of CHO or MILK every 30 min immediately after the exercise (POST0) until 210 min post-exercise. After 240 min, participants performed an exercise capacity test.

Studies using animal models of hypercholesterolemia have established that taurine reduces cholesterol levels; however, the precise mechanism underlying this cholesterol-lowering effect is unclear. This study addressed this issue by investigating whether bile acid/farnesoid X receptor (FXR) signaling is involved in taurine-mediated cholesterol-lowering effect. Fxr-null and wild-type mice were administered 2% (w/v) taurine in their drinking water and fed a control diet or control diet supplemented with 1% (w/w) cholesterol (cholesterol diet) for 10 days.

The Occidental Low- and High-Saccharin-Consuming rats (respectively, LoS and HiS) have been selectively bred for decades to study the relationship between taste and behaviors in and beyond the ingestive domain. Whether the saccharin phenotype is associated with behavioral periodicities tied to reproductive status is not known. Here we describe for the first time variation across the estrous cycle in chow intake and wheel running by LoS and HiS rats.

Twelve-year single critical care center experience of nicardipine prolonged-release implants in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage: a propensity score matching analysis.

Objective: To develop a nicardipine prolonged-release implant (NPRI) to prevent cerebral vasospasm in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage in 1999, which may be used during craniotomy, and report the results of our recent 12-year single critical care center experience.

Methods: Of 432 patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage treated between 2007 and 2019, 291 were enrolled. 97 Patients were aged >70 years (33%), 194 were female (67%), 138 were World Federation of Neurological Societies grades 1, 2, and 3 (47%), 218 were Fisher group 3 (75%), and 243 had an anterior circulation aneurysm (84%).

Determination of Polyhexamethylene Biguanide Hydrochloride Using a Lactone-Rhodamine B-Based Fluorescence Optode.

A new determination method for polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride (PHMB) using a lactone-rhodamine B (L-RB) based fluorescence optode has been developed. The optode membrane consists of 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether as a plasticizer, L-RB, and poly (vinyl chloride). The optode responds to tetrakis (4-fluorophenyl) borate, sodium salt (NaTPBF) in the μM range.

Administration timing and duration-dependent effects of sesamin isomers on lipid metabolism in rats.

Metabolism of lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides has daily variations and is controlled by a circadian clock. Sesamin isomers, a mixture of sesamin and episesamin (SE), are types of lignans in sesame seed that have shown the improvement of lipid metabolism with various diseases in an animal model. We therefore tested whether the effects of SE on lipid metabolism are influenced by timing of administration.

We report a case of a 56-year-old female with an incidentally noted radiopaque foreign body in the right ventricular cavity on chest x-ray following kyphoplasty. In this report, we discuss how to differentiate between the potential intracardiac foreign bodies and how to establish the diagnosis of polymethyl methacrylate embolism.

Palo azul has numerous physiological effects that contribute to the prevention of metabolic syndromes, although the mechanism remains unclear.
