Laparoscopy provides extensive data for the decannulation of a peritoneal dialysis catheter and is being increasingly used to diagnose encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. However, there are few reports on the methods of decannulation of peritoneal dialysis catheters. In this study, we examined the laparoscopic findings and postoperative complications of patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis catheter removal.

Article Synopsis
  • * Patients who visited ESRD clinics that support SDM had a significantly lower mortality rate compared to those who did not, indicating better outcomes with specialized care.
  • * The findings suggest that seeing an ESRD specialist not only improves survival rates after starting dialysis but also influences the choice of treatment modality, such as an increased preference for peritoneal dialysis among patients in the visited group.

Background: Anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (p-CKDs) may initiate or exacerbate left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). This study aimed to determine whether treatment using long-acting erythropoietin-stimulating agents (L-ESAs) is independently associated with LVH during the pre-dialysis to maintenance dialysis period in p-CKDs.

Methods: Physical and laboratory examinations were performed 120 days before initiating dialysis in p-CKDs (baseline).

Background: Arterial calcification is an important factor in determining the prognosis of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Few studies on aortic calcification have involved radial artery calcification (RAC). This study aimed to analyze risk factors for RAC in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and investigate the relationship between subsequent cardiovascular events (CVE) and vascular access trouble (VAT).

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter exit-site care is critically important for the prevention of catheter-related infections (CRIs) and subsequent peritonitis. The postoperative management of the site is particularly essential because it has an open wound that is always adjacent to a PD catheter tube. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) for postoperative PD catheter exit sites.

We herein report the first case of a patient with recurrent migration of the peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter into the inguinal hernia sac. A 58-year-old man suffered from end-stage renal disease due to polycystic kidney disease (PKD). A year before starting PD, a PD catheter was implanted with stepwise initiation of PD using the Moncrief-Popovich technique.

The number of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has been increasing, with dialysis treatment being a serious economic problem. To date, no report in Japan considered medical costs spent at the initiation of dialysis treatment, although some reports in other countries described high medical costs in the first year. This study focused on patient status at the time of initiation of dialysis and examined how it affects prognosis and the medical costs.

Introduction: Most guidelines in different countries recommend waiting more than 2 weeks for the initial cannulation of an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) after its creation. Although an experienced examiner can subjectively determine if an AVF is ready for early cannulation, there is a lack of objective information to guide whether early cannulation is appropriate or how early cannulation may affect an AVF's primary patency. The current study examined the relationship between the initial cannulation and the prognosis of AVF, considering ultrasonography (US) findings.

Although the decrease in pyruvate secretion by brewer's yeasts during fermentation has long been desired in the alcohol beverage industry, rather little is known about the regulation of pyruvate accumulation. In former studies, we developed a pyruvate under-secreting sake yeast by isolating a strain (TCR7) tolerant to ethyl α-transcyanocinnamate, an inhibitor of pyruvate transport into mitochondria. To obtain insights into pyruvate metabolism, in this study, we investigated the mitochondrial activity of TCR7 by oxigraphy and (13) C-metabolic flux analysis during aerobic growth.

Chitosan/hydroxyapatite (HAp) composites with a homogeneous nanostructure have been prepared by a co-precipitation method. According to TEM observations, HAp crystallites in the composites formed elliptic aggregations 230 nm in length and 50 nm in width. The typical length of the aggregations corresponded approximately to that of a chitosan molecule.

A 66-year-old woman had suffered from repeated heart failure beginning 6 years after mitral valve replacement. Left ventricular pseudoaneurysm was discovered 9 years after the replacement, while no evidence including histology was obtained for the cause of the pseudoaneurysm except the mitral valve replacement. The progression of aortic valve stenosis and the formation of the pseudoaneurysm may have contributed to the onset of congestive heart failure.

To clarify the significance of exercise BMIPP (beta-methyl iodophenyl pentadecanoic acid) and resting T1 delayed single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in the assessment of ischemia and viability, we studied maximal exercise-loading BMIPP SPECT following rest-injected T1 3 h SPECT in 11 control subjects, 20 patients with effort angina and 38 patients with old myocardial infarction. The left ventricular wall on ECT was divided into 9 segments. BMIPP and T1 uptake were scored as 0 = normal, 1 = reduced, 2 = severely reduced, or 3 = absent.

The effects of sedation by intravenous fentanyl on the rate-pressure product (pulse rate x systolic blood pressure/100), arterial oxygen saturation, electrocardiographic change, and serum cortisol concentration were studied during gastroduodenoscopy in 84 patients randomized to receive fentanyl or no intravenous sedative (controls). Fentanyl administration increased the tolerance of patients and attenuated the endoscopy-induced rise in rate-pressure product and serum cortisol concentration. Desaturation of arterial oxygen was minimal and there was no difference in arterial oxygen saturation between the fentanyl group and the control group.
