This retrospective observational multicentre cohort study compared the rate of postoperative cystoid macular oedema (CME) between two intraocular lens (IOL) scleral fixation (SFIOL) techniques: a flanged IOL fixation technique (Yamane technique) and a suture IOL transscleral fixation technique (conventional technique). The study included 207 eyes with postoperative CME that had undergone SFIOL and were observed for > 12 weeks between January 2019 and January 2021. The primary endpoint was a comparison of the rate of postoperative CME at 3 months between groups.

Antibodies are powerful tools for the therapy and diagnosis of various diseases. In addition to conventional hybridoma-based screening, recombinant antibody-based screening has become a common choice; however, its application is hampered by two factors: (1) screening starts after Ig gene cloning and recombinant antibody production only, and (2) the antibody is composed of paired chains, heavy and light, commonly expressed by two independent expression vectors. Here, we introduce a method for the rapid screening of recombinant monoclonal antibodies by establishing a Golden Gate-based dual-expression vector and in-vivo expression of membrane-bound antibodies.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers analyzed data from 48 eyes and found that 8 of them (16.3%) developed MH, with distinctive preoperative Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) findings showing a "foveal mountain peak" (FMP) sign in those cases.
  • * The presence of the FMP sign was significantly more common in eyes that developed MH, suggesting it could be a useful indicator for assessing the risk of MH in similar patients.

Introduction: In classic ballet, choreography often involves tiptoe standing. Tiptoe standing requires a high and stable foot arch structure, which is achieved by contraction of the plantar intrinsic foot muscles (PIFMs). Long-term repetitive loading with a specific movement can induce hypertrophic adaptation of the associated muscles.

The activity of occipitotemporal regions involved in linguistic reading processes, such as the ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT), is believed to exhibit strong interactions during higher-order language processing, specifically in the connectivity between the occipital gyrus and the temporal gyrus. In this study, we utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with psychophysiological interaction (PPI) and dynamic causal modeling (DCM) to investigate the functional and effective connectivity in the occipitotemporal network during speed reading. We conducted the experiment with native Japanese speakers who underwent and without speed-reading training and subsequently performed established reading tasks at different speeds (slow, medium, and fast) while undergoing 3-Tesla Siemens fMRI.

We previously showed that macrophage-like cells (MLCs) are increased in eyes with advanced diabetic retinopathy (DR). Here, we hypothesized that MLC density was correlated with ischemia using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and ultra-widefield fluorescein angiography (UWF-FA). Treatment-naïve diabetic eyes were prospectively imaged with repeated OCTA (average 5.

Background/aim: Cell-free and concentrated ascites reinfusion therapy (CART) was established for refractory ascites and renovated CART (Keisuke Matsusaki (KM) -CART) has been recently developed especially for malignant ascites; however, the actual clinical efficacy of KM-CART has been rarely reported.

Patients And Methods: We performed 226 KM-CART procedures in 104 patients with malignant ascites in three hospitals from August 2013 to September 2018. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for ascites data, related complications, symptoms before and after each CART and prognosis after the first CART.

Article Synopsis
  • Vascular mural cells (VMCs) are vital for the health of retinal blood vessels, and their loss is linked to the progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR), yet there’s still uncertainty about when this loss occurs in humans.
  • This study utilized advanced imaging techniques to measure VMC density in various groups: healthy individuals, those with diabetes but no retinopathy, and individuals with clinical DR and diabetic macular edema.
  • Results showed that VMC loss starts even before classic signs of DR appear, with significant reductions observed in advanced stages of DR, indicating that preserving these cells could be key to preventing DR progression.
