Background: JCOG1113 is a randomized phase III trial that showed non-inferiority of gemcitabine plus S-1 to gemcitabine plus cisplatin in patients with advanced biliary tract cancer. Assessment of inter-institutional heterogeneity in chemotherapy contributes to confirm generalizability and reliability of the study itself. However, there have been no studies conducted to assess the heterogeneity among participating centers in randomized phase III trials for biliary tract cancer.

Bone-modifying agents (BMAs) have been widely used to reduce skeletal-related events, including pathological fractures. Herein, we aimed to clarify the incidence of pathological fractures caused by high-risk femoral bone metastases after palliative radiotherapy (RT) in the BMA era and evaluate the necessity of prophylactic surgical stabilization. We assessed 90 patients with high-risk femoral bone metastases, indicated by Mirels' scores ≥ 8, without pathological fractures and surgical fixations, who received palliative RT at our institution between January 2009 and December 2018.

The adsorption of heavy metals on iron oxides generally increases with pH and is almost complete at neutral to slightly alkaline pH. However, almost complete adsorption on a linear scale does not imply sufficient removal of the heavy metals in terms of their toxicity. Here, we elucidated the chemical reactions that determine the solid-liquid partitioning of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on goethite at high pH.

Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), in combination with a calcineurin inhibitor, is used as the prophylaxis for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Compared to intravenous methotrexate (MTX), MMF is associated with a lower incidence of mucositis and shorter time for hematopoietic engraftment but comparable incidence of acute GVHD, resulting in the preferred use of MMF for GVHD prophylaxis in elderly patients or those undergoing cord blood transplantation (CBT). Although several studies have evaluated the clinical impact of MTX omission due to toxicity after allogeneic HCT, the impact of oral MMF interruption for GVHD prophylaxis on transplant outcomes remains unclear.

Patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer often present with duodenal bleeding, a potentially life-threatening complication. In our case series of six unresectable pancreatic cancer patients with tumor bleeding, we explored the efficacy and safety of placement of a covered self-expandable metallic stent in the duodenum as a treatment option; we achieved a hemostasis rate of 67% (4/6), with a rebleeding rate of 50% (2/4). No complications occurred with stent placement, except for food impaction in one patient.

Background: Gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel (GnP) therapy has been shown to improve the prognosis in patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer (PC); however, the efficacy and safety of GnP in PC patients with malignant ascites (MA) remains unknown.

Methods: We retrospectively investigated PC patients with peritoneal dissemination who had received GnP as first-line chemotherapy at our institution between March 2015 and August 2021. The following patient data were reviewed: patient characteristics, overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rate (ORR), adverse events (AEs), and relative dose intensity (RDI).

Identifying unequivocal signs of life on Mars is one of the most important objectives for sending missions to the red planet. Here we report Red Stone, a 163-100 My alluvial fan-fan delta that formed under arid conditions in the Atacama Desert, rich in hematite and mudstones containing clays such as vermiculite and smectites, and therefore geologically analogous to Mars. We show that Red Stone samples display an important number of microorganisms with an unusual high rate of phylogenetic indeterminacy, what we refer to as "dark microbiome", and a mix of biosignatures from extant and ancient microorganisms that can be barely detected with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment.
