The co-chaperonin GroES (Hsp10) works with chaperonin GroEL (Hsp60) to facilitate the folding reactions of various substrate proteins. Upon forming a specific disordered state in guanidine hydrochloride, GroES is able to self-assemble into amyloid fibrils similar to those observed in various neurodegenerative diseases. GroES therefore is a suitable model system to understand the mechanism of amyloid fibril formation.

During this change, or dedifferentiation, the expression of type I and type III procollagen is induced where normal chondrocytes express little type I and type III procollagen. In this study, we attempted to determine the mechanism(s) for the induction of such procollagen expression in dedifferentiating chondrocytes.

The bla(CTX-M-15) transposition unit has often been found on plasmids and the genetic contexts have been examined; however, less is known about the frequency and contexts of the bla(CTX-M-15) transposition unit on the chromosome. This study was performed to determine the chromosomal location of the bla(CTX-M-15) transposition unit and to analyse the molecular structure of the region surrounding the bla(CTX-M-15) transposition unit in E.

Aims: In Europe and North America, schizophrenia patients treated with antipsychotic agents have a higher prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome compared with healthy individuals. In Japan, the prevalence of overweight/obesity in the general population is considerably lower than that in Europe and North America. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of underweight and overweight/obesity as well as laboratory data in Japanese inpatients with schizophrenia.

However, few studies have reported the relationship between pollen count levels and the prevalence of pollinosis. To evaluate the relationship between JC pollen count levels and the prevalence of pollinosis in children, we investigated the sensitization and development of symptoms for JC pollen in two areas of Akita in northeast Japan with contrasting levels of exposure to JC pollen.

The present study was performed to identify novel biomarkers capable of predicting the progression of knee OA.
Methods: A total of 69 plasma samples (OA patients undergoing radiographic progression, n = 25; nonprogression, n = 33; healthy donors, n = 11) were analyzed by surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF MS), and ion peaks of interest were identified by liquid chromatography and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI)-TOF MS.
A validation study was conducted on a rapid multiresidue method for determination of pesticide residues in vegetables and fruits by LC-MS/MS. Pesticide residues in the vegetables or fruits were extracted with acetonitrile in a disposable tube using a homogenizer, followed by salting out with anhydrous magnesium sulfate and sodium chloride in the presence of citrate salts for buffering. The extract was purified with a double-layered cartridge column (graphite carbon black/primary secondary amine silica gel; GCB/PSA).

This peptide is a putative marker for collagenase-specific type II collagen (CII) degradation, which is a critical step in osteoarthritis pathology. The concentration of CIINE in supernatants of canine cartilage explants showed increase upon IL-1β-stimulation and collagenase inhibitors suppressed this elevation of CIINE.

Glucose abnormalities were detected in 11.9% of Japanese schizophrenic patients in a recent cross-sectional study that included fasting glucose monitoring.

To improve the efficacy of IFN-α-based therapies, we evaluated a novel treatment strategy for RCC using an IFN-α2b gene construct with a repetitive hypoxia-inducible factor binding site.
Methods: We constructed an expression plasmid designated 5HREp-IFN-α2b containing the coding region of the IFN-α2b gene.
Ingestion of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) is known to enhance athletic performance, probably via increased extracellular buffering capacity. At present, little is known about the direct effects of NaHCO3 on myogenesis, especially in vitro. Here, we examined the effects of NaHCO3 and the combined effects of NaHCO3 and continuous mild heat stress (CMHS) at 39°C on the differentiation of human skeletal muscle myoblasts (HSMMs).

Objective: To assess the impact of health care access and socioeconomic determinants on Pap smear screening in Latin America.
Methods: Individual-level data was collected from the Demographic and Health Surveys in Bolivia, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago between 1987 and 2008. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify socioeconomic and health care determinants of two outcomes: knowledge of Pap smears and recent Pap smear screening.
Atypical antipsychotic drugs are superior to typical antipsychotic drugs in having a lower incidence of extrapyramidal side-effects, so atypical antipsychotic drugs have become the mainstream in the clinic. However, there is growing interest in the effects of antipsychotic treatment on other serious side-effects such as metabolic abnormalities, sexual function and QT prolongation. There is a need for biomarkers that can help in early identification of patients who are at risk for these serious side-effects.

The total active moiety level, in other words the sum of the RIS and 9-OH-RIS serum levels, may be important for estimating the clinical effects of RIS treatment. However, there have been no consistent results reported regarding the relationship between cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6 or adenosine triphosphate-binding cassette subfamily B member 1 (ABCB1) variant alleles and 9-OH-RIS or total active moiety plasma levels.

Recently, it was reported that SAP deficient mice were protected from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In this study, we postulated SH2D1A gene to be a candidate susceptibility gene for SLE and analyzed its association with SLE.

Methods: Subjects were patients with schizophrenia who were treated with either OLZ (n = 69), RIS (n = 60), ARP (n = 62), or QTP (n = 31). Electrocardiographic measurements were conducted, and the QT interval was corrected using Bazett's correction formula.
Objectives: There have so far been few papers studying the metabolic syndrome (MetS) prevalence rate in Japanese patients with schizophrenia. We studied the MetS prevalence rate in Japanese controls and inpatients with schizophrenia and compared the prediction factors for the occurrence of MetS.
Methods: The subjects were 319 inpatients with schizophrenia and 154 controls.
Our goal of this study is to characterize the functions of language areas in most precise terms. Previous neuroimaging studies have reported that more complex sentences elicit larger activations in the left inferior frontal gyrus (L. F3op/F3t), although the most critical factor still remains to be identified.

The prognosis of acute-onset diffuse ILD (AoDILD) occurring in collagen disease patients is very poor. Here, we investigated serum biomarker profiles of AoDILD to find markers predicting outcome in patients with collagen diseases.

We examined the differences in plasma PRL levels among 268 patients treated for schizophrenia with olanzapine (OLZ), risperidone (RIS), aripiprazole (ARP), quetiapine (QTP), or perospirone (PER). The participants had received antipsychotic monotherapy with stable doses of OLZ, RIS, ARP, QTP, or PER for ≥ 3 weeks, and fasting blood samples were drawn to examine plasma PRL levels.

These Bi films were found to be strained due to the influence of the substrate. Accordingly, the band structure is affected and Bi undergoes a topological phase transition; it is shown that the Z(2) topological invariant in three dimensions switches from +1 (trivial) to -1 (nontrivial or topological).
