Unlabelled: A 73-year-old man with a history of aortic arch replacement for chronic type B aortic dissective aneurysm was admitted for heart failure. He had normal left ventricular systolic function and had pulmonary hypertension with a pulmonary artery pressure of approximately 90 mmHg. He had been diagnosed with pneumoconiosis from his occupation and pulmonary hypertension due to heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and respiratory disease.

Single‑agent nintedanib suppresses metastatic osteosarcoma growth by inhibiting tumor vascular formation.

New therapeutic approaches are needed for osteosarcoma, which is the most common malignancy of the bone, especially for metastatic cases. Nintedanib is a potent, oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor approved for treating idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, which blocks a variety of receptor signals, including fibroblast growth factor receptors, vascular endothelial growth factor receptors and platelet-derived growth factor receptors. The present study assessed the effect of nintedanib on previously developed mouse AXT osteosarcoma cells, and on AXT-derived osteosarcoma developed in C57BL/6 mice, which displays lethal tumors with osteoid formation and lung metastatic lesions that mimics human disease.

O-linked N-acetylglucosamine transferase (OGT) critically regulates wide variety of biological processes such as gene expression, metabolism, stress response, signaling and proteostasis. In adult hematopoiesis, OGT is crucial for differentiation of B and T cells and the maintenance of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). However, a role for OGT in fetal liver (FL) hematopoiesis remains unknown.

Depletion of R270C Mutant p53 in Osteosarcoma Attenuates Cell Growth but Does Not Prevent Invasion and Metastasis In Vivo.

Novel therapeutic targets are needed to better treat osteosarcoma, which is the most common bone malignancy. We previously developed mouse osteosarcoma cells, designated AX (accelerated bone formation) cells from bone marrow stromal cells. AX cells harbor both wild-type and mutant forms of p53 (R270C in the DNA-binding domain, which is equivalent to human R273C).

Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus RNA in Ticks from Wild Mongooses in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging zoonotic tick-borne disease caused by SFTS virus (SFTSV). SFTSV has a wide spectrum of animal hosts and is considered to circulate in an enzootic tick-vertebrate-tick cycle. A previous seroepidemiological study showed the presence of anti-SFTSV antibodies in wild mongooses (Herpestes auropunctatus) and indicated that outdoor activity was associated with an increased risk of tick bites among Okinawa residents.

Ferrocene-Containing Pseudorotaxanes in Crystals: Aromatic Interactions with Hammett Correlation.

Single crystals of pseudorotaxanes, [(FcCHNHCHAr)(DB24C8)][PF] (DB24C8 = dibenzo[24]crown-8, Fc = Fe(CH)(CH), Ar = -CH-3,4-Cl, -CH-3,4-F, -CH-4-F, -CH-4-Cl, -CH-4-Br, -CH-3-F-4-Me, -CH-4-I) and [(FcCHNHCHCH-4-Me)(DB24C8)][Ni(dmit)] (dmit = 1,3-dithiole-2,4,5-dithiolate), were obtained from solutions containing DB24C8 and ferrocenylmethyl(arylmethyl)ammonium. X-ray crystallographic analyses of the pseudorotaxanes revealed that the aryl ring of the axle moiety and the catechol ring of the macrocyclic component were at close centroid distances and parallel or tilted orientation. The structures with parallel aromatic rings showed correlation of the distances between the centroids to Hammett substituent constants of the aryl groups.

Humans sometimes attempt to infer an artificial agent's mental state based on mere observations of its behavior. From the agent's perspective, it is important to choose actions with awareness of how its behavior will be considered by humans. Previous studies have proposed computational methods to generate such publicly self-aware motion to allow an agent to convey a certain intention by motions that can lead a human observer to infer what the agent is aiming to do.

Seroepidemiological study of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome in animals and humans in Okinawa, Japan.

In Okinawa prefecture, Japan, the first case of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) was confirmed in August 2016, and this case remains to be the only reported case of SFTS in Okinawa. The epidemiological investigation indicated that the patient had been infected on the main island of Okinawa, but source and route of infection were unknown. Therefore, to understand the possible source and route of SFTS virus (SFTSV) infection in Okinawa, we performed a seroepidemiological study of SFTSV among animals and dwellers in Okinawa and conducted a questionnaire survey to investigate risk factors for tick bites in Okinawa.

O-linked N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) transferase (OGT) is a unique enzyme introducing O-GlcNAc moiety on target proteins, and it critically regulates various cellular processes in diverse cell types. However, its roles in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) remain elusive. Here, using Ogt conditional knockout mice, we show that OGT is essential for HSPCs.

Aim: Stonefish, known in Japan as "Oni-daruma-okoze" ( Block et Schneider), inhabit the waters surrounding the Okinawa/Amami districts. By far, habubites have been limited to these areas mainly due to climatic conditions. Due to changes promoted by global warming and increasing tourism, concerns regarding the potential for stonefish envenomation as well as jellyfish stings on the main island of Japan are increasing.

Clinical characteristics of jellyfish stings in Japan.

Aim: Jellyfish known as "habu-kurage" () inhabit the waters surrounding Okinawa and Amami, Japan, and jellyfish stings are limited to areas outside the Japanese main island. However, the shifts promoted by global warming and increasingly intensive interactions with people have led to concerns regarding the possibility of increased jellyfish stings on the main island of Japan. Similar concerns are being raised all over the world.

Lung Fixation under Constant Pressure for Evaluation of Emphysema in Mice.

Emphysema is a significant feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Studies involving an emphysematous mouse model require optimal lung fixation to produce reliable histological specimens of the lung. Due to the nature of the lung's structural composition, which consists largely of air and tissue, there is a risk that it collapses or deflates during the fixation process.

Purpose: In patients with overlap syndrome (OVS), the pathophysiologies of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can interact with one another. Focusing on low arousal threshold, the authors evaluated polysomnographic features of OVS patients.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) due to lung diseases is classified as group 3 by the Dana Point classification. Given the basic pathophysiological conditions of group 3 lung diseases and the previously well-known concept of hypercapnic pulmonary vasoconstriction, chronic hypercapnia besides alveolar hypoxia might be another causative factor to increase mean pulmonary arterial pressure (PAm). Two hundred twenty-five subjects with chronic pulmonary diseases were assessed by a right heart catheterization and blood gas parameters.

Research Design And Methods: This was a meta-analysis of two multicenter, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, 24-week studies of 633 Japanese patients with moderate to severe AD receiving memantine 20 mg/day (n = 318) or placebo (n = 315). Activation of ventral tegmental area dopaminergic neurons reverses pathological allodynia resulting from nerve injury or bone cancer.

Chronic pain induced by nerve damage due to trauma or invasion of cancer to the bone elicits severe ongoing pain as well as hyperalgesia and allodynia likely reflecting adaptive changes within central circuits that amplify nociceptive signals. The present study explored the possible contribution of the mesolimbic dopaminergic circuit in promoting allodynia related to neuropathic and cancer pain. Mice with ligation of the sciatic nerve or treated with intrafemoral osteosarcoma cells showed allodynia to a thermal stimulus applied to the paw on the injured side.
