Background: The management of capecitabine-related hand-foot syndrome (HFS) is critical to avoid progression of the syndrome through early detection and early response; management of HFS involves joint medication management by physicians and pharmacists (hospital and community pharmacists). This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of collaborative medication management in cancer patients with HFS by comparing its effectiveness with the traditional response using monitoring reports from community pharmacists.

Exposure of cultured mammalian cells to paraformaldehyde (PFA) is an effective approach to induce membrane blebs, which is followed by their detachment from the cellular cortex to yield giant membrane vesicles in extracellular spaces. Although PFA-induced giant vesicles have attracted significant interest in the field of cell membrane dynamics, their biochemical components and cytocompatibility remain largely unknown. Objectives: Most attention has been focused on physiologically generated membrane blebs on the cellular cortex, whereas artificial membrane blebs induced by chemicals are studied to a lesser extent.

Results: We found that exposure of HeLa human cervical cancer cells to paraformaldehyde (PFA), followed by incubation in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) efficiently induced large membrane blebs on the cellular cortex. Intriguingly, sequential exposure of the PFA-treated cells to PBS containing dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) facilitated shedding of the blebs from the cellular cortex, yielding a high quantity of large extracellular vesicles in the supernatant, which was applicable to assess the potentials of compounds and proteins as membrane influencers.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of high-dose taurine supplementation for prevention of stroke-like episodes of MELAS (mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes), a rare genetic disorder caused by point mutations in the mitochondrial DNA that lead to a taurine modification defect at the first anticodon nucleotide of mitochondrial tRNA, resulting in failure to decode codons accurately.

Methods: After the nationwide survey of MELAS, we conducted a multicentre, open-label, phase III trial in which 10 patients with recurrent stroke-like episodes received high-dose taurine (9 g or 12 g per day) for 52 weeks. The primary endpoint was the complete prevention of stroke-like episodes during the evaluation period.

Background: The dystroglycan complex consists of two subunits: extracellular α-dystroglycan and membrane-spanning β-dystroglycan, which provide a tight link between the extracellular matrix and the intracellular cytoskeleton. Previous studies showed that 43 kDa β-dystroglycan is proteolytically cleaved into the 30 kDa fragment by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in various non-muscle tissues, whereas it is protected from cleavage in muscles by the sarcoglycan complex which resides close to the dystroglycan complex. It is noteworthy that cleaved β-dystroglycan is detected in muscles from patients with sarcoglycanopathy, sarcoglycan-deficient muscular dystrophy.

We describe three patients from the same family with hereditary sensory ataxic neuropathy followed by proximal muscle weakness in the lower extremities. Sensory ataxic gait began as an initial symptom when patients were in their 50s. Mild proximal weakness in the lower extremities appeared several years later.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an infectious pathogen that commonly occurs after stem cell transplantation. We report a case of meningoencephalitis with multiple abscess formation caused by MRSA, which occurred in a 62-y-old female soon after allogeneic cord blood transplantation, and which was successfully treated by the administration of intravenous linezolid.
