Human subjects generally perceive the global form of hierarchically organized visual patterns faster than the local form. To test whether macaque monkeys show a similar precedence for global processing, two monkeys were trained to discriminate either the global or local form of hierarchical visual patterns. The response time to discriminate the global form was shorter than that to discriminate the local form.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA case of primary liposarcoma of the cervix is described in a 49-year-old woman with a fungating cervical mass which was diagnosed as liposarcoma on the basis of cytologic features and the intracellular lipids. Most of the adipocytes and vacuolated lipoblasts were positive for S- 100 protein. The mass was well circumscribed and limited to the superficial cervical stroma.

Malignant struma ovarii with metastasis in an extremely rare form of ovarian carcinoma. We describe two cases of malignant struma ovarii that demonstrated widespread peritoneal metastases. In the second case described here, furthermore, the tumor recurred II years later in the contralateral ovary and omentum, while the primary tumor previously was pure struma ovarii with no evidence of metastasis.

She was started on hemodialysis, and her fluid balance was serially monitored with bioelectrical impedance analysis. Her body weight decreased and bioelectrical impedance values increased, along with resolution of pulmonary edema in the process of the removal of excessive fluid retention with hemodialysis.

Little is known about how and where this selectivity is generated. We show that blockade of inhibition mediated by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) markedly altered the selectivity of TE neurons by augmenting their responses to some stimuli but not to others.

On the other hand, the dorsal visual pathway leading to the posterior parietal cortex has been known to process information on location in space. Likewise, neurons selective for binocular disparity, which convey information on depth, have been found mainly in areas along the dorsal visual pathway.

Radiological examination at birth revealed that the ribs and the bones of the extremities were very short and vertebral bodies were greatly reduced in height with wide intervertebral spaces. The femurs were shaped like French telephone receivers.

We evaluated the temporal components of the anterior cruciate ligament-hamstring synergy by simulating an injury to the ligament in a goat model. Reflexive hamstring activation in anesthetized goats was evaluated when the anterior cruciate ligament was loaded with static subfailure, dynamic subfailure, and dynamic failure loads.

We also improved the method to construct tungsten-in-glass multiple-barreled electrodes suitable for intraretinal recording from RGCs. Only the small-diameter pipe was inserted into the eye ball through the sclera, through which only the taper part of a multiple-barreled electrode pass.

Polymorphonucleocytosis in the early stage of the illness suggests the implication of neutrophils in the pathogenesis of the disease. In the acute phase of Kawasaki disease, mRNA expression of prostaglandin H2 synthase (PHS)-2, as determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, was markedly enhanced, and thromboxane A2 (TXA2)-synthesizing activity was increased in polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL).

The protective role of metallothionein (MT) against the myocardiotoxicity and hepatotoxicity of doxorubicin (Dox) was investigated in mice. Dox-induced elevations of plasma creatine kinase activity, a measure of myocardiac damage, and plasma glutamate pyruvate transaminase activity, reflecting hepatic damage, were prevented by pretreatment with an MT inducer. Pretreatment with zinc induced MT in the liver and heart, thereby reducing Dox toxicity in these two organs.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFHuman subjects perceive two crossing bars, one in front of the other, when shown a cross with disparity added to its horizontal limbs, and they also perceive neon-color spreading when shown a stereoscopic Redies-Spillmann figure. It has thus been hypothesized that the human visual system follows the principle of generic image sampling in reconstructing 3-dimensional (3-D) surface structures. Here we examine whether monkeys also perceive these surface structures.

Following single administration of a low dose of Cd (0.1 mg/kg), hepatic Cd levels and the sum of total Cd in the liver and kidney (K + L) were significantly less in the controls than in MT-null mice.

We examined the spatial distribution and the types of cells that give rise to these horizontal axons, which are important factors in determining the nature of the lateral interactions in TE. Intracortical injections of retrograde tracers labeled columnar clusters of cells and cells diffusely scattered within TE.

To isolate the amine acceptor protein substrates of transglutaminase in mammalian livers, a biotin-labeled primary amine substrate of transglutaminase, 5-(biotinamido) pentylamine, was used for biotin labeling of proteins in the liver extracts by endogenous transglutaminase activity. The biotin-labeled proteins were isolated and recovered by biotin-avidin-affinity chromatography.

A 10-year-old Japanese girl developed acute renal failure following a 100-meter dash during physical training at school. After the run, she experienced intense pain in the loins with nausea and vomiting lasting more than 12 h. On the following morning, she was found to have mild proteinuria and acute renal failure (ARF).

Occasional "reversal errors" can be explained in terms of a conflict between the normal encoding of the empathic characteristics of an event and the syntactic limitations imposed by impaired production processes. To account for these findings, we propose a production model following Levelt (1989) for making pragmatic choices among syntactic forms.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFActivity-dependent synaptic plasticity was examined in vivo in two cortical areas of the adult monkey visual system, the primary visual and inferotemporal cortex, the first and late cortical stages essential for object recognition. Discontinuous high-frequency electrical stimulation of intrinsic horizontal connections in layer 2/3 caused contrasting forms of synaptic plasticity in the two areas. In the inferotemporal cortex, long-term potentiation of extracellular field potentials in layer 2/3 was induced, whereas in the same pathway of V1, identical stimulation protocol elicited long-term depression.
