Using a comprehensive Japanese stroke database, we investigated its epidemiological characteristics and associations with functional outcomes.

Infrared spectroscopy of protonated dimethylamine clusters, H(DMA), ( = 3-7), and their Ar-tagged clusters was performed in the NH and CH stretching vibrational region to explore their hydrogen bond network structures. A stable isomer search and vibrational spectral simulations of the clusters were also carried out to support the interpretations of the observed spectra. Weakly hydrogen-bonded NH stretching vibrational bands, which are characteristic of cyclic structures of small-sized protonated clusters, are observed in the spectra of the Ar-tagged clusters of ≥ 5, while only linear chain type structures are suggested for the Ar-tagged clusters of = 3-4 and the bare clusters of all the sizes.

Regular consumption of sucrose-containing beverages may increase the risk for several health problems, including allergic diseases and particularly asthma, but the association between sucrose consumption and allergic dermatitis is understudied. We investigated the effects of sucrose solution intake on allergic contact dermatitis in rats and found early exacerbation of 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB)-induced disease symptoms and altered composition of the gut microbiota after 14 d of intake.

Long-range fiber-based laser Doppler vibrometer using Faraday rotator for polarization-rotation compensation.

In this paper, we report a method for extending distance of an optical fiber-based laser Doppler vibrometer system. This method uses a Faraday rotator (FR) to compensate polarization rotation in an installed long-range optical fiber. The construction of the proposed system is simple and achieved only by adding the FR to the sensing head unit, leading to stable and highly reliable vibration measurement even by using a long-range optical fiber exceeding kilometer.

Aberrant proteins located in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) undergo rapid ubiquitination by multiple ubiquitin (Ub) E3 ligases and are retrotranslocated to the cytosol as part of the ER-associated degradation (ERAD). Despite several ERAD branches involving different Ub E3 ligases, the molecular machinery responsible for these ERAD branches in mammalian cells remains not fully understood. Through a series of multiplex knockdown/knockout experiments with real-time kinetic measurements, we demonstrate that HERC3 operates independently of the ER-embedded ubiquitin ligases RNF5 and RNF185 (RNF5/185) to mediate the retrotranslocation and ERAD of misfolded CFTR.

Development of a two-dimensional LC-MS/MS system for the determination of proline and 4-hydroxyproline enantiomers in biological and food samples.

A two-dimensional LC-MS/MS system has been developed for the enantioselective determination of proline (Pro), cis-4-hydroxyproline (cis-4-Hyp) and trans-4-hydroxyproline (trans-4-Hyp) in a variety of biological samples. The amino acids were pre-column derivatized with 4-fluoro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD-F), and the NBD-derivatives were separated by a reversed-phase column (Singularity RP18) as their D plus L mixtures in the first dimension. The collected target fractions were then introduced into the second dimension where the enantiomers were separated by a Pirkle-type enantioselective column (Singularity CSP-001S) and determined by a tandem mass spectrometer (Triple Quad™ 5500).
