Although many studies suggest that varicocelectomy leads to improvement in semen parameters and morphology, its clinical efficacy remains controversial. The detailed morphological parameters described in the World Health Organization guidelines are important in terms of showing the effect of microsurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy on morphological changes.An observational, retrospective clinical cohort study was conducted with patients followed up from January 2018 to August 2021.

Short-term effects of COVID-19 on semen parameters: A multicenter study of 69 cases.

Objective: COVID-19, which is known to be caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is a global health problem that can cause multiorgan damage because of its use of the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor in its pathophysiology. We aimed to investigate whether SARS-CoV-2 had a short-term effect on spermatogenesis, which plays an important role in male reproductive health as it has abundant ACE2 expression in testicular tissue.

Material And Methods: This multicenter study included 69 patients aged 20-45 years, who admitted to our hospitals between April 2020 and October 2020 with a history of a positive test result for SARS-CoV-2 based on the nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swab samples and had recovered from the disease at least three months earlier and who had undergone a spermiogram test in the hospital database within the last year before the onset of disease.

Visceral adiposity index is useful for evaluating obesity effect on erectile dysfunction.

Studies show that erectile dysfunction (ED) is associated with obesity, and it has been shown that the possibility of developing sexual dysfunction in obese men is 30% higher compared to those with normal weight. Obesity is measured using various methods, for example waist circumference (WC) measurement or body mass index (BMI), but recently, visceral adiposity index (VAI) has also been utilised to better assess obesity and metabolic syndrome. In our study, the potential link between VAI and ED was investigated.

Effect of rural practice observation on the anxiety of medical students.

Introduction: The aim of this study is to identify the level and causes of anxiety of sixth year medical students related to working in a rural area and the effect of a 1-day mobile rural health service observation on their anxiety.

Methods: In the Ondokuz Mayis University Medical School in Samsun, Turkey, 212 students participated in a 1-day mobile rural health service led by a family physician. Between June 2011 and June 2013, during their family medicine internship, each student completed a structured questionnaire and a State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) before and after the observation.

Effect of a workshop in rational pharmacotherapy for interns during family medicine clerkship in Samsun- Turkey.

Objective: We aimed to investigate the effect of rational pharmacotherapy workshop for interns on the rationality, cost and number of drugs prescribed.

Methods: The participants were asked to prescribe a medication for acute noninflammatory osteoarthritis (ANOA), acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ARS), acute otitis media (AOM), acute uncomplicated cystitis (AC), and acute bacterial tonsillopharyngitis (ABT) before and after workshop. Total 3000 prescriptions were scored regarding rationality of the drug choice (0-10), format (0-5), instructions (0-4), legibility (0-1) and total (0-20 points).

Introduction: Antidepressant drugs are used in the treatment of pain as an adjuvant or alone. It has been shown that antidepressant drugs have analgesic effects in various diseases (diabetic neuropathy, low back pain, cancer pain etc.) Sertraline is a potent serotonin re-uptake inhibitor.

The effect of simvastatin on picrotoxin-induced seizure in mice.

Objective: To study the effect of simvastatin on picrotoxin-induce seizures in mice in order to understand the impact of gabaergic system on neuronal cell death.

Methods: The study was held between July and September 2011, at the Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon, Turkey. Balb/c mice weighting 20-40g were randomly selected and divided into five groups of six each.

The effects of sertraline on blood lipids, glucose, insulin and HBA1C levels: A prospective clinical trial on depressive patients.

Background: In this study, we aimed to investigate the possible effects of sertraline on blood glucose and lipid levels as risk factors for cardiovascular disease in depressive patients.

Methods: Eight male and twelve female depressive patients, diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria, were included in this study. The subjects aged 19-50 years, did not smoke, and had normal body mass index (BMI), homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values, blood pressure, blood glucose, insulin and lipid levels.

Characteristics and quality of life analysis of caregivers of cancer patients.

Cancer affects not only the individuals with cancer, but also their families considerably. The aim of this study was to determine the sociodemographic characteristics and home care needs of caregivers of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and evaluate their quality of life scores. A total of 126 primary caregivers of patients receiving chemotherapy who were eligible for inclusion criteria participated in the study.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever among children in north-eastern Turkey.
