The Da Vinci Robot, a Promising Yet Underused Minimally Invasive Tool for Spine Surgery: a Scoping Review of its Current Role and Limits.

Background: The Da Vinci robot ® (DVR), released in the early 2000s, provided a set of innovation aiming at pushing minimally invasive surgery forward. Its stereoscopic magnified visualization camera, motions that exceed the natural range of the human hand, or tremor reduction enhanced the surgeon's skills and added value in many surgical fields.

Objective: To map the current use of the DVR in spine surgery, identify gaps, address its limits and future perspectives.

Change in standing acetabular orientation 2 years postoperatively after surgical correction of adult spinal deformity.

Introduction: Although sagittal alignment is known to influence pelvic position, few studies accurately identify the relationship between sagittal alignment and acetabular orientation. We hypothesized that postoperative PT should be correlated with acetabular change in native hips after surgical correction of adult spinal deformity. The objective of this study was therefore to describe the correlation between the change in pelvic tilt and the change in acetabular orientation two years after surgical correction of adult spinal deformity.

Fostering Inclusivity in PM&R: A National Survey.

There is a persistent underrepresentation of women and multiple ethnic minority groups among medical school and residency applicants and trainees, particularly in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). There is limited information on what causes these demographic disparities in PM&R and on strategies to increase interest in the field. To address this gap and improve early recruitment efforts, the authors conducted the first-ever national survey to gather information on pre-medical students' perceived barriers to medical school admissions, career interests, perceptions of PM&R, and strategies to increase interest in PM&R.

Neurosurgery in a Pacific archipelago: how to provide optimal care. Experience of the opening of a first-line neurosurgery department.

Introduction: In the beginning of November 2023, the authors launched a neurosurgery department in Nouméa, New Caledonia. Emergency cranial surgeries are performed by orthopedic surgeons. All other cases are transferred to Australia or mainland France.

Novel research on food perception is required for long-term space exploration. There is limited research on food/beverage sensory analysis in space and space-simulated conditions, with many studies presenting biases in sensory and statistical methods. This study used univariate and multivariate analysis on data from pick-and-eat leafy greens to assess self-reported and biometric consumer sensory analysis in simulated microgravity using reclining chairs and space-immersive environments.

Assessing the influence of spontaneous fermentation on consumer emotional responses to roasted arabica coffee in a biometric approach.

Beyond sensory quality, food-evoked emotions play a crucial role in consumers acceptance and willingness to try, which are essential for product development. The link between fermented coffee sensory characteristics and elicited emotional responses from consumers is underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate consumers' acceptability of spontaneously fermented and unfermented roasted coffee through self-reported sensory evaluation and biometrics assessment.

Profiling the fecal microbiome and its modulators across the lifespan in the Netherlands.

Defining what constitutes a healthy microbiome throughout our lives remains an ongoing challenge. Understanding to what extent host and environmental factors can influence it has been the primary motivation for large population studies worldwide. Here, we describe the fecal microbiome of 3,746 individuals (0-87 years of age) in a nationwide study in the Netherlands, in association with extensive questionnaires.

Criminality, foreignness, and illness stereotypes underlie racial minorities' social identity threat wearing different face masks during COVID-19.

Objective: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Black and Asian, compared to White, people experienced unique social identity threats (SITs) while wearing face masks (Kahn & Money, 2022). This study examines specific racial stereotypes (criminality, foreignness, illness) and mask types (bandanas, surgical masks, maskless) that underlie SIT while wearing masks and their effect on safety.

Method: Black, Asian, and White participants ( = 591) completed a cross-sectional survey about SIT experiences wearing different face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this work, samarium-doped BaTiO (BT:Sm) nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared and coated with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to investigate their optical characteristics and compatibility with biological systems. The structure, particle morphology, optical properties, and biological compatibility of the NPs were assessed. The results demonstrated the formation of BT:Sm and [(BT:Sm)-PEG].

Consumer insights into the at-home liking of commercial beers: Integrating nonvolatile and volatile flavor chemometrics.

Consumer acceptability of beers is influenced by product formulation and processing conditions, which impart unique sensory profiles. This study used multivariate techniques to evaluate at-home consumer sensory acceptability of six commercial beers considering their style, fermentation type, and chemical composition. Samples included top-fermented beers (American India Pale Ale and Stout) and bottom-fermented beers (Pilsner, zero-alcohol Pilsner, Vienna Lager, and Munich Dunkel).

Exploring host-commensal-pathogen dynamics in cell line and organotypic human intestinal epithelial models.

Host and microbiome intricately interact in the ecosystem of the human digestive tract, playing a crucial role in our health. These interactions can initiate immune responses in the epithelial cells, which, in turn, activate downstream responses in other immune cells. Here, we used a CaCo-2 and a human intestinal enteroid (HIE) model to explore epithelial responses to both commensal and pathogenic bacteria, individually and combined.

Fractured cervical spine, dissected vertebral artery, and life-threatening stroke: A challenging case report and literature review.

Introduction: Vertebral artery injury (VAI) following blunt trauma can lead to acute or delayed life-threatening posterior fossa ischemic stroke. Its management raises controversial issues and is still open to debate.

Material & Method: We report the case of a 48-year-old male who presented a life-threatening posterior circulation ischemic stroke, secondary to a vertebral artery dissection caused by a cervical spine fracture.

Primary intradural Extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma of the cauda equina: A case report and literature review.

Intradural Extraosseous Ewing sarcoma (IEES) is an infrequent occurrence. We report a case of a 66-year-old male who presented with a 2-month history of low back pain and bilateral S1 sciatica, with acute sphincter dysfunction. Imaging studies revealed an intradural extramedullary lesion in the cauda equina spanning from level L4 to S1.

An updated classification of the anatomical variations of the internal iliac venous drainage system: Surgical implications for anterior lumbar spinal approaches.

Background: Advanced pelvic surgery is associated with potential vascular risks. The aim of this study was to complete the existing classification of the anatomical variations of the internal iliac veins encountered on a series of preoperative angio CT with a view to performing anterior lumbar spine surgery.

Materials And Methods: In this monocentric retrospective study conducted between 2010 and 2020, all preoperative angio CT performed before an anterior lumbar surgery were systematically analyzed.

Long-term prescribed drug use in stage I-III rectal cancer patients in Sweden, with a focus on bowel-regulating drugs after surgical and oncological treatment.

Purpose: To describe long-term prescribed drug use after rectal cancer treatment.

Methods: We identified 12,871 rectal cancer patients without distant metastasis between 2005 and 2016 and 64,341 matched population comparators using CRCBaSe (a Swedish nationwide register linkage of colorectal cancer patients). Mean defined daily doses (DDDs) of drug dispensing during relapse-free follow-up were calculated by Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical drug categories.

Background: Spinal cord injuries (SCI) lead to functional alteration with important consequences such as motor and sensory disorders. The repair strategies developed to date remain ineffective. The adipose tissue-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) is composed of a cocktail of cells with trophic, pro-angiogenic and immunomodulatory effects.

A role and mechanism for redox sensing by SENP1 in β-cell responses to high fat feeding.

Pancreatic β-cells respond to metabolic stress by upregulating insulin secretion, however the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here we show, in β-cells from overweight humans without diabetes and mice fed a high-fat diet for 2 days, insulin exocytosis and secretion are enhanced without increased Ca influx. RNA-seq of sorted β-cells suggests altered metabolic pathways early following high fat diet, where we find increased basal oxygen consumption and proton leak, but a more reduced cytosolic redox state.
