Trisomy of human chromosome 21 (T21) gives rise to Down syndrome (DS), the most frequent live-born autosomal aneuploidy. T21 triggers genome-wide transcriptomic alterations that result in multiple atypical phenotypes with highly variable penetrance and expressivity in individuals with DS. Many of these phenotypes, including atypical neurodevelopment, emerge prenatally.

Novel Machine Learning HIV Intervention for Sexual and Gender Minority Young People Who Have Sex With Men (uTECH): Protocol for a Randomized Comparison Trial.

Background: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) young people are disproportionately affected by HIV in the United States, and substance use is a major driver of new infections. People who use web-based venues to meet sex partners are more likely to report substance use, sexual risk behaviors, and sexually transmitted infections. To our knowledge, no machine learning (ML) interventions have been developed that use web-based and digital technologies to inform and personalize HIV and substance use prevention efforts for SGM young people.

The Puerto Rican Infant Metagenomic and Epidemiologic Study of Respiratory Outcomes (PRIMERO): Design and Baseline Characteristics for a Birth Cohort Study of Early-life Viral Respiratory Illnesses and Airway Dysfunction in Puerto Rican Children.

Epidemiologic studies demonstrate an association between early-life respiratory illnesses (RIs) and the development of childhood asthma. However, it remains uncertain whether these children are predisposed to both conditions or if early-life RIs induce alterations in airway function, immune responses, or other human biology that contribute to the development of asthma. Puerto Rican children experience a disproportionate burden of early-life RIs and asthma, making them an important population for investigating this complex interplay.

Atraumatic Spontaneous Transvaginal Small Bowel Evisceration: A Rare Surgical Emergency.

Abdominal pain ranks as the predominant cause for emergency department consultations. Although rare, transvaginal evisceration of the small intestine necessitates immediate surgical intervention due to its potential to induce intestinal ischemia and peritonitis. Key risk factors include postmenopausal status, a history of gynecologic surgery, and heightened abdominal pressure.

Strengths and challenges among Black and Latinx people living with HIV during COVID-19: A mixed-methods investigation of the translation of self-management across syndemic health crises.

Black and Latinx people are disproportionately impacted by HIV, COVID-19, and other syndemic health crises with similar underlying social determinants of health. Lessons learned from the HIV pandemic and COVID-19 response have been invoked to improve health equity at the systemic level in the face of other emergent health crises. However, few have examined the potential translation of strategies between syndemics at the individual level.

Types and factors affecting and impact of ableism among Asian children and youth with disabilities and their caregivers: a systematic review of quantitative studies.

Purpose: Asian children and youth with disabilities often experience multiple barriers and discrimination in education, healthcare, and social settings, which influence their well-being, especially the transition to adulthood. This review aims to explore the types, factors affecting and impact of ableism on Asian children and youth with disabilities and their caregivers.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review and a narrative synthesis whereby we searched the literature from six international databases, including Healthstar, Ovid Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, Scopus, and Web of Science.

Accessible independent housing for people with disabilities: A scoping review of promising practices, policies and interventions.

Background: Accessible housing is imperative to enabling independent living for many people with disabilities; yet, research consistently shows how people with disabilities often lack appropriate accessible housing and are more likely to experience unaffordable, insecure, and/or poor quality housing. Therefore, the aim of this study was to understand promising practices, policies and interventions regarding accessible independent housing for people with disabilities.

Methods: We conducted a scoping review that involved searching seven international literature databases that identified 4831 studies, 60 of which met our inclusion criteria.

Challenging dominant narratives, interrupting objectification, and queer creativity: Queer sex worker art in Los Angeles.

Drawing on queer of color critique, this paper uses mixed methods including participant observation, interviews, visual and textual analysis, and photovoice to interrogate sex workers' queer creative practices. Building upon the larger oeuvre of sex working artists, contemporary sex working artists in Los Angeles utilizes queer creativity to thwart hegemonic readings of sex work. Performances at two activist fundraisers drew on the themes and esthetics of sex work to counter mainstream narratives about sex work and workers, and to interrupt their objectification.

Two new species of from Caribbean deep reefs, with comments on the related genus (Teleostei, Gobiidae, Gobiosomatini, Nes subgroup).

Tropical deep reefs (~40-300 m) are diverse ecosystems that serve as habitats for diverse communities of reef-associated fishes. Deep-reef fish communities are taxonomically and ecologically distinct from those on shallow reefs, but like those on shallow reefs, they are home to a species-rich assemblage of small, cryptobenthic reef fishes, including many species from the family Gobiidae (gobies). Here we describe two new species of deep-reef gobies, and , that were collected using the submersible from rariphotic reefs off the island of Roatan (Honduras) in the Caribbean.

Methods: We conducted a scoping review involving seven international literature databases from 2000 to 2022 that identified 38 studies meeting our inclusion criteria.

Varieties of 'new normal': Employment experiences among youth with and without disabilities during the reopening stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Working and volunteering in the reopening stages of the COVID-19 pandemic has looked different depending on the location, employment sector and nature of the job. Although researchers have begun exploring the impacts on adults, little is known about what the transition to a 'new normal' in the reopening stages has been like for youth, especially those with disabilities.

Objective: To explore and compare the experiences and perspectives of youth with and without disabilities who were working, volunteering or seeking work during the re-opening stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada.

Warthin's Tumor of the Parotid Gland With Degeneration to Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Parotid gland neoplasms are rare; some benign lesions, such as Warthin's tumor (WT), can present as malignant degeneration to carcinomas or, even rarer, to lymphomas. In the literature, there are fewer than 30 reported cases of primary lymphoma of the parotid gland. We present a case of a 65-year-old male patient with a first diagnosis of WT of the parotid gland who later presented a tumor recurrence and underwent a second surgery, reporting diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the parotid gland.

Anal Canal Duplication in a 25-Year-Old Female Patient.

Anal canal duplication (ACD) is a congenital malformation that typically presents and is diagnosed early in life. It can be associated with other syndromes or congenital malformations. ACD is one of the rarest duplications of the gastrointestinal tract, with no more than 90 to 100 cases reported in the literature.

Ableism among children and youth with acquired brain injury and their caregivers: a systematic review.

Purpose: Children and youth with acquired brain injury (ABI) experience persistent discrimination and ableism. The purpose of this systematic review was to understand the experiences and impact of ableism among children and youth with ABI.

Method: Six international databases were systematically searched for articles from 2002-2022.

The increase in critical bone diseases and defects in the world's population increases the need for bone substitutes to restore form and function. Organic and inorganic scaffolds with antibacterial properties could provide advantages for bone regeneration. In this study, we obtained scaffolds of polycaprolactone (PCL) charged with calcium phosphates nanoparticles and impregnated with extracts of Colombian plants as an alternative for potential bone regeneration.

More than just double discrimination: a scoping review of the experiences and impact of ableism and racism in employment.

Purpose: Research has shed light on the employment barriers faced by individuals with disabilities, and by racialized people. The challenges faced by people belonging to both marginalized groups are less well-understood. The purpose of this scoping review was to examine existing research on labour market and workplace experiences of racialized people with disabilities, and to identify how ableism and racism intersect to shape employment experiences and outcomes.

Workplace accommodations during the COVID-19 pandemic: A scoping review of the impacts and implications for people with disabilities.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to widespread changes in the way people work. Some of these changes represent the same kinds of work modifications or adjustments that have often been requested as workplace accommodations, and which may improve labour market and employment outcomes for people with disabilities.

Objective: The aim of this scoping review was to examine the literature on workplace accommodations in the pandemic and their impacts and implications for people with disabilities.

Purpose: Young people with disabilities are persistently under-employed and experience concerning rates of discrimination and ableism in looking for work and within the workplace. Focusing on youth is salient because rates of ableism are often higher among younger ages compared to older. The objective of this systematic review was to explore the experiences and impact of workplace discrimination and ableism among youth and young adults with disabilities.

Ableism within health care professions: a systematic review of the experiences and impact of discrimination against health care providers with disabilities.

Purpose: People with disabilities experience concerning rates of ableism and are significantly under-represented within healthcare education and professions. Focusing on healthcare professions is important for enhancing the diversity and inclusion of equity-deserving groups within the workforce. The objective of this review was to explore the experiences and impact of workplace discrimination and ableism among healthcare providers and trainees with disabilities.

Tourists perceptions of Caribbean islands facing environmental threats before the COVID-19 health crisis: Holbox Island and Archipelago of Bocas del Toro.

Knowledge gaps exist in the socio-ecological systems of small touristic islands in Latin America. Understanding tourists' perceptions of their environmental knowledge can help plan actions to prevent natural capital loss necessary for local economies. Tourists' perceptions of a touristic hotspot, Holbox Island, were documented.

Assessment of energy efficiency and performance in a two-phase anaerobic process for organic matter removal.

Energy efficiency (EE) depends mainly on the lower heating values (LHVs) of hydrogen and methane selected from the thermodynamics tables under ideal conditions. However, for practical applications, the heating value should be calculated by considering some environmental factors under real conditions. Accordingly, this study compared EE using the ideal LHV with the EE using the real LHV in a two-phase anaerobic digestion reactor treating synthetic wastewater.

Development and Characterization of PLGA-Based Multistage Delivery System for Enhanced Payload Delivery to Targeted Vascular Endothelium.

Vascular-targeted drug delivery remains an attractive platform for therapeutic and diagnostic interventions in human diseases. This work focuses on the development of a poly-lactic-co-glycolic-acid (PLGA)-based multistage delivery system (MDS). MDS consists of two stages: a micron-sized PLGA outer shell and encapsulated drug-loaded PLGA nanoparticles.
