We prospectively evaluated the diagnostic value of sonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 24 shoulders in 23 patients with suspected rotator cuff tears using arthrography as gold standard. Sonography demonstrated 14 of 15, MRI 10 of 15 rotator cuff tears, respectively. Sonography diagnosed seven of nine intact rotator cuffs correctly, MRI eight of nine.

The MR relaxation properties of ferrioxamine-B, a chelate of iron, were investigated in vitro and in vivo to establish the potential use of the compound as a paramagnetic contrast agent. Whereas the paramagnetic relaxivity of ferrioxamine-B is such that, compared to gadolinium-DTPA (Gd-DTPA), two to three times higher concentrations are necessary to produce the same relaxation effects, the toxicity of the iron ion should be much lower because of the availability of physiological metabolic pathways. Preliminary experiments in three dogs under invasive cardiovascular monitoring demonstrated that high-dose bolus application (0.

Shoulder pain is a common complaint and shoulder hyperostosis a frequent radiological condition. However, little is known about the association between the clinical and radiological findings. To evaluate the clinical relevance of shoulder hyperostosis we performed a controlled, blind study of 99 hospitalized probands with and without thoracospinal hyperostosis on lateral chest X-rays.

Overlapping fragments of the gene encoding glycoprotein gI of pseudorabies virus (PRV; herpesvirus suis 1) were expressed in bacteria. Using the fusion proteins and a panel of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against gI as well as swine sera we found that the N-terminal part of gI (residues 33 to approximately 100) contains a highly antigenic and immunogenic domain. Transfer of antibodies binding to this region as well as vaccination with fusion proteins containing the N terminus of gI are able to confer protection to mice against a lethal challenge of virus.

At Zurich fragmentation of gallstones is a joint venture between the Visceral Surgery Clinic, the Medical Clinic, Medical Policlinic, Radiodiagnostic Central Institute and Urologic Clinic. Lithotripsy is performed by a team from the Visceral Surgery Clinic with apparatus placed at their disposal by the Urologic Clinic. Indications for lithotripsy include symptomatic cholecystolithiasis, functioning gallbladder, and up to 3 gallstones of at least 10 mm and at most 30 mm diameter.

This is the first controlled study of the frequency of back pain in a European caucasian population with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). Elderly patients admitted to hospital for reasons other than back pain were assessed for the presence of spinal DISH using the routine lateral chest radiograph films. A total of 106 probands (82 males, 24 females) with a mean age of 70 years fulfilled the criteria for DISH as defined previously.

The treatment of reactive arthritis and Reiter's syndrome depends on the joints affected, on extra-articular symptoms, and the infection responsible for the disease. Purely symptomatic measures are inadequate in the treatment of therapy-resistant or chronic arthritis. The choice of a suitable "remission-inducing agent" is also frequently determined by the involvement of the skin, intestines or eyes which may dominate.

The diagnostic value of magnet resonance imaging for the diagnosis of pathological abdominal conditions has been limited sofar because of artefacts due to movement susceptibility. The current indications comprise: liver: differential diagnosis of metastases, cysts and hemangiomas, identification of small metastases, demonstration of malignant vascular invasion, evaluation of hemochromatosis; kidneys: evaluation of transplant rejection, analysis of complex cysts, demonstration of malignant tumoral invasion. The application of magnetic resonance will be greatly extended by the introduction of rapid image sequences and the application of specific contrast media.

Medical radiology comprises diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and radio-oncology. Digital radiography, sonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance and percutaneous techniques mark the present development of radiodiagnosis. Current advances in nuclear medicine are emission computed tomographic techniques and biochemical radiopharmaceuticals.

On hundred and sixty premedicated patients undergoing surgery were assessed for changes in pulmonary function and signs of partial neuromuscular blockade following precurarization with a fixed dose of alcuronium 2 mg, pancuronium 1 mg or vecuronium 1 mg, and the efficacy of the drugs in the prevention of suxamethonium-associated side effects was compared. In this respect, no differences were observed between the three drugs. Pretreatment with alcuronium and pancuronium was followed by small decreases in pulmonary function.

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum is a disorder of connective tissue that is associated with numerous systemic complications, including accelerated atherosclerosis, gastrointestinal bleeding, angioid streaks in the ocular fundus, and blindness. Diagnosis of the disease is important because many of its complications can be prevented and genetic counseling can be offered to family members of affected patients. The purpose of this study was to examine the usefulness of scar biopsy in establishing a diagnosis of pseudoxanthoma elasticum in patients with angioid streaks but without characteristic skin lesions.

Idiopathic hemochromatosis is normally associated with hepatic cirrhosis, myocardial disease and diabetes mellitus. A characteristic arthropathy occurs in approximately 40% of patients with hemochromatosis. The onset may precede other detectable clinical manifestations of the disease.
