Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. MiRNAs are recognized as important molecules in cancer biology. The aim of the study was to identify a novel biomarker miR-148b and its mechanism in the modulation of NSCLC progression.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-associated mortality worldwide. The present study investigated the effects of K(CHFNO)Nd(PWO)·25HO (FNdPW), a chemically synthesized polyoxometalate that contains rare earth elements, on lung cancer growth, and explored the mechanism underlying its actions. The effects of FNdPW on the cell viability and apoptosis of human lung cancer A549 cells were measured using MTT assay, acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining and electron microscopy.

Objective: To study the molecular subtypes and microflora structure of Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) strains isolated in Jiangxi province.

Methods: A total of 123 Nm strains separately isolated from patients, close contacts and health people in 1976-1987 and 2005-2008 were investigated by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and PorA subtyping, to test the characteristics of gene Nm and sequence porA. Minimum spanning tree was constructed by using BioNumerics software based on data of MLST; and the microflora structure was then analyzed.

Objective: To study the correlation between Vibrio cholerae strains isolated from natural enviroment and fishery products and the source of infection during V. cholerae outbreaks.

Methods: Cholera toxin gene was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification.

Objective: To investigate the expression of platelet-derived growth factor(PDGF) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) in transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) from patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(IPF), and study the potential role of cytokines in the development of IPF.

Methods: The immunohistochemical methods were used to determine the expression of PDGF, TGF-beta in TBLB from patients with IPF.

Results: In IPF patients, TGF-beta mainly existed at tiny bronchial epithelial cells, alveolar epithelial type-II cells and alveolar macrophages, showing strong expression compared with controls (P<0.
