Article Synopsis
  • Recent advances in understanding ependymomas have highlighted gaps in knowledge about their molecular evolution, particularly during tumor recurrence.
  • A detailed analysis of tumor samples from a 19-year-old patient who experienced multiple recurrences revealed significant genetic diversity and an evolving mutation landscape, emphasizing the complexity of the disease.
  • Notably, the gene ADGRL3 was consistently mutated across all tumor samples in this case, indicating its potential role in ependymoma progression, while lower levels of ADGRL3 expression were linked to poorer survival outcomes in other patients.

The objectives of this study were to develop and optimize ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) for shikonin from using response surface methodology (RSM) and to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of shikonin. The maximum yield of shikonin was 1.26% under the optimal extraction conditions (ultrasound power, 93 W; time, 87 min; temperature, 39°C; and liquid-solid ratio, 11 : 1).

Surfactants can improve the hydrophobicity of poorly water-soluble drugs and increase the stability of microparticles by reducing surface tension. This study describes that surfactant-engineered florfenicol instant microparticles (FIMs) increase bioavailability through a micellar solubilization mechanism. The FIMs were prepared by a modified emulsification method, and the optimal prescription was obtained by a combination of single factor investigation and response surface methodology.

Background: Skull base meningioma surgery is often difficult and complicated to perform. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of 3-dimensional (3D)-printed models of skull base meningioma in the representation of anatomical structures, the simulation of surgical plans, and patient education on surgical outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective study of 35 patients (3D group: 19 patients and non-3D group: 16 patients) with skull base meningioma was conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how systemic inflammatory indexes can help in diagnosing grade III gliomas that come from oligodendroglial cells.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 154 patients, focusing on various inflammatory indexes like the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and albumin-to-gamma-glutamyl transferase ratio (AGR).
  • Results showed that combining NLR and AGR improved diagnosis accuracy and could predict patient survival, making these metrics useful in clinical settings for oligodendroglial tumors.

Isotactic polybutylene-1 (iPB) has lots of advantages and is best used as hot water pipe. However, to transform into stable crystal form I, the iPB needs as long as 7 days. In this process, the irreversible damage brings great difficulties to the use of the iPB.

, a unicellular enteric microsporidian parasite, can infect humans and a wide range of animals throughout the world. Although has been identified in many animals, there is no information regarding the genotypes of in pet birds in China. Birds are important sources of emerging infectious diseases that affect humans, and immunosuppressed individuals can be exposed to potential zoonotic agents shed by birds.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the prevalence and genetic characteristics of a common enteric protist in giant pandas, red pandas, and various bird species in southwestern China, addressing gaps in previous research on these animals.
  • - A total of 168 fecal samples were analyzed, revealing an overall prevalence of 11.3%, with the highest rates found in ruddy shelducks (18.2%) and the lowest in green peafowls (6.7%).
  • - Two zoonotic subtypes (ST1 and ST8) were identified, with ST1 being more common, particularly in older giant pandas, marking this as the first study to report these findings in the specified animal species in China.

The prognostic value of tumor characteristics for glioma has been controversial, partly because of a lack of knowledge about how these associations develop. Extent of resection may be factors that mediate the relationship between tumor characteristics and the hazard of death from glioma. : This consecutive study retrospectively included a group of 393 treatment-naive patients with newly, pathologically confirmed glioma between January 2004 and December 2014.

The antioxidant effect of salidroside has been proven, but its role in liver injury is poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the protective effects and mechanism of salidroside on liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl) in vivo. Mice were pretreated with salidroside (60 mg/kg, intraperitoneally injected, i.

We aimed to develop a high-throughput deep DNA sequencing assay of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to identify clinically relevant oncogenic mutations that contribute to the development of glioblastoma (GBM) and serve as biomarkers to predict patients' responses to surgery. For this purpose, we recruited five patients diagnosed with highly suspicious GBM according to preoperative magnet resonance imaging. Subsequently, patients were histologically diagnosed with GBM.

Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) offers great potential to improve the mechanical and crystallization properties of isotactic polybutene-1 (iPB) because of its low cost, biodegradability, renewability and excellent mechanical properties. However, the compatibility of polar MCC and non-polar iPB is poor. In this study, maleic anhydride grafted polybutene (MAPB) was prepared by the solution method and was used as a compatibilizer in the fabrication of iPB/MCC composites by using a twin screw extruder.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a new kind of cellulose with great potential in enhancing preparation of isotactic Polypropylene (iPP) composites, which have been found with excellent performance. However, the interface compatibility between BC and iPP is poor. In this study, iPP/BC composites were prepared by solution mixing.

Isotactic polypropylene (iPP) is a commonly used thermoplastic polymer with many excellent properties. But high brittleness, especially at low temperatures, limits the use of iPP. The presence of transcrystallization of iPP makes it possible for fiber-reinforced iPP composites with higher strength.

Background: Surgical procedures are critical in making a conclusive histopathological diagnosis of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL), which typically presents contrast-enhancing lesions in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The fluorescein sodium-guided technique could enhance tumor visibility. We reported a series of patients with PCNSL underwent fluorescein sodium-guided surgical procedures.

Ubiquitin-specific protease 22 (USP22) is a member of the "death-from-cancer" signature, which plays a key role in cancer progression. Previous evidence has shown that USP22 is overexpressed and correlates with poor prognosis in glioma. The effect and mechanism of USP22 in glioma malignancy, especially cancer stemness, remain elusive.

  • The study investigated clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients with breast cancer brain metastases (BCBM) at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center from 2000 to 2015, involving 134 patients.
  • The median survival after the diagnosis of brain metastases was found to be 16.2 months, with survival rates of 62% at one year and 37% at two years.
  • Results indicated that both surgical resection (craniotomy) and targeted therapy significantly improved survival, while radiotherapy following primary breast cancer surgery also contributed positively to outcomes in patients who later developed brain metastases.

Background: Prolyl 4-Hydroxylase Subunit Alpha 1 (P4HA1) is the active catalytic component of prolyl 4-hydroxylase and plays a crucial role in modulating extracellular matrix hemostasis. P4HA1 has been reported to promote tumor progression by enhancing invasion and angiogenesis. Overexpression of P4HA1 is associated with decreased survival for patients with breast and prostate cancer.
