Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanosized particles secreted by cells that play crucial roles in intercellular communication, especially in the context of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). These vesicles carry complex cargo, including proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, that reflects the physiological or pathological state of their cells of origin. Multiomics analysis of cell-derived EVs has provided valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying CVDs by identifying specific proteins and EV-bound targets involved in disease progression.

Titanium (Ti), characterized by its exceptional mechanical properties, commendable corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, has emerged as the principal functional materials for implants in biomedical and clinical applications. However, the Ti-6Al-4V (TC4ELI) alloy has cytotoxicity risks, whereas the strength of the existing industrially pure titanium TA4 is marginally inadequate and will significantly limit the scenarios of medical implants. Herein, we prepared ultrafine-grained industrial-grade pure titanium TA4 and titanium alloy TC4ELI via the equal channel angular pressing method, in which the TA4-1 sample has ultrahigh strength of 1.

Objective: Low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) increases the risk of arterial diseases, possibly including abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). This study explored the relationship between eGFR (2008 CKD-EPI equation), annual eGFR decline, and subsequent risk of developing AAA in a large, community based sample.

Methods: This was an observational study using complete healthcare records of Stockholm residents free from AAA who underwent routine creatinine testing during 2011 - 2021.

Background: Sotalol is a class III antiarrhythmic drug used for the management of patients with atrial fibrillation to maintain sinus rhythm. Sotalol-induced QT interval prolongation can be proarrhythmic and is conventionally initiated in an inpatient setting where routine electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring is available while sotalol reaches the steady state. The emergence of cellular-compatible home ECG devices, such as AliveCor's Kardia Mobile 6L, which offers 6-lead ECG, has made it possible to accurately measure QT intervals outside the hospital.

Article Synopsis
  • Current guidelines advise against metformin for patients with advanced kidney impairment, despite limited evidence supporting this recommendation, prompting an observational study to compare outcomes of continuing versus stopping metformin after developing stage 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD).
  • The study found that out of 4,278 metformin users with incident CKD stage 4, those who stopped taking the medication experienced a significantly lower 3-year survival rate compared to those who continued, although the incidence of major cardiovascular events was similar between the two groups.
  • The findings suggest that ongoing metformin use may be beneficial for patients with advanced kidney impairment, although the study does acknowledge potential limitations due to residual confounding factors.

  • MSC-EV (mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles) administration in mice with liver injury shows enhanced targeting and uptake by damaged liver cells.
  • The usage of phosphatidylserine on injured hepatocytes aids in the internalization of MSC-EVs, potentially through interaction with a specific protein on MSC-EVs.
  • The therapeutic effectiveness of MSC-EVs in protecting the liver is closely linked to this PS-dependent uptake mechanism, which could inform future EV-based treatments for liver injury.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to determine if sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i) reduce the risk of hyperkalemia and help maintain the use of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASi) in people with type 2 diabetes, compared to dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors (DPP-4i).
  • The research involved nearly 30,000 adults in Stockholm over several years, measuring incidents of hyperkalemia and RASi discontinuation in those starting either SGLT-2i or DPP-4i.
  • Results showed that SGLT-2i users had significantly lower rates of hyperkalemia (both mild and

Since its Fast-Track approval by the Federal Drug Administration, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has been marked by controversies. Unconfirmed reports of adverse events in both Japan and Denmark led to suspensions of national vaccination programs, which setback the fight against cervical cancer and associated mortality and morbidity. Despite follow-up studies of vaccine adverse reports, additional randomized control trials, and review reports from both the World Health Organization and the European Commission, there is still a great deal of hesitancy around the vaccine.

Background And Aims: The burden and outcomes of inflammation in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) are not well defined beyond the controlled settings of trials and research cohorts.

Methods: This was an observational study of ASCVD adults undergoing C-reactive protein testing in Stockholm's healthcare (2007-21). After excluding C-reactive protein tests associated with acute illness or medications/conditions that bias C-reactive protein interpretation, systemic inflammation was evaluated over a 3-month ascertainment window.

Importance: Hyperkalemia is a common complication in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) that may limit the use of guideline-recommended renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASis). Emerging evidence suggests that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) increase urinary potassium excretion, which may translate into reduced hyperkalemia risk.

Objective: To compare rates of hyperkalemia and RASi persistence among new users of GLP-1RAs vs dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4is).
