After several rounds of milling process for sugars extraction from sugarcane, certain amounts of water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) still remain in sugarcane bagasse. It is a bottleneck to utilize WSC in sugarcane bagasse biorefinery, since these sugars are easily degraded into inhibitors during pretreatment. Herein, a simple pre-fermentation step before pretreatment was conducted, and 98 % of WSC in bagasse was fermented into d-lactic acid.

Background: As a serious and common out-of-hospital infectious disease, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) ranks among the leading causes of death in both developing and developed countries. In recent years, the increasing incidence of CAP has led to an increase in the number of hospitalizations. Although CURB-65 (or CRB-65) and pneumonia severity Index (PSI) scoring systems are widely used in CAP prognostic scoring systems, each score had some limitations in predicting whether patients with CAP would require prolonged hospitalization.

Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is associated with acquired optic disc edema, hyperopia, and posterior globe flattening in some astronauts during long-duration spaceflight possibly due to the headward fluid redistribution in microgravity. The goal of this study was to assess whether strict head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest as a spaceflight analog would produce globe flattening and whether centrifugation could prevent these changes. Twenty-four healthy subjects separated into three groups underwent 60 days of strict 6° HDT bed rest: one control group with no countermeasure ( = 8) and two countermeasure groups exposed to 30 min daily of short-arm centrifugation as a means of artificial gravity (AG), either intermittent (iAG, = 8) or continuous (cAG, = 8).
